All electricity is fed into the grid, gas the same. What is green about it?This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

I think your husband has the right idea.0

If you are on a standard E7 tariff then your husband doesn't care that much about the price. Since he is happy for you both to be paying that premium why would he not be happy paying an additional green premium?
Why not use a comparison site (such as uswitch.com or energyhelpline.com) and you can see for yourself what E7 tariffs cost in your area (click the 'view all tariffs' button on the results table then scroll to the bottom to find all the green tariffs)? You can then see what the two premiums are (the premium for your current tariff and the premium for the cheapest green tariff.)0 -
how can I convince him it won't add too much to the bill?
you won't cause it will add heaps to your bill, before adding on missing out cashback etc from regular switching.
if you want to be 'green' look for ways to reduce your energy useage and spend money on making your home more energy efficient (insulation, draught exclusion, better windows etc etc)
don;t think you'll suddenly go 'green' by jumping on the most expensive energy tariff you can find and 'assuming' something happens somehwere to make you green because someone tells you so
thats kinda not how it works :whistle:0 -

Not true, Ovo have a 100% green electricity tariff, although its not the cheapest deal in the market it may well be cheaper than the OPs current set up and its a fixed price deal too.
Scottish Power and Southern electric both have green tariffs too that are around the same price as the standard tariff or cheaper (H20 on SP and Better Plan on SE)
So you can still be green and it not add "heaps" to your bill.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

The energy that is taken out of the grid by people on these green tariffs is replaced by electricity from renewable resources. So the energy you are using is still the same but its being replaced by green energy.
Wether you believe the energy companies actually do that or not is a different matter..Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Green energy tarriffs are an expensive confidence trick.
Find the cheapest supplier you can, work out your carbon footprint and plant some trees. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
It's a symbolic penance, not an actual ecological act.
It's the same as paying a green surcharge when you fly.
You pay a pittance to absolve yourself of moral responsibility.
To actually discourage flying, the amount should be in the hundreds so people will only fly if absolutely necessary.
Basically, it's plenary indulgence. A hedge fund manager will donate £10million to charity to help the homeless, after making £10 billion by trading on collateralised debt obligations that put these people on the street in the first place. His conscience is now clear, and can now go through the eye of the needle.
Marketing men are providing a vital service to society by selling items that are marked Eco, so that housewives will feel good, just like Catholic priests absolving people who feel guilty and want to pay somebody to take the guilt away.
All anybody has to do is not have children, and reduce the world population to a sustainable level. I will be very happy to pay someone £30 so they do not have children. Vasectomy or Fallopian tube thingy is quite cheap, I hear.0 -
Going green is only as viable as the size of your wallet.
The Government doesn't give a jot about Green issues once they've used the emotive subject to part its gullible peasants from their hard earned wedge due to some tax or other. To prove the fact, the duty concession on most Biodiesel fuels has just been removed, and is now taxed the same as regular fossil diesel, meaning there is no incentive to produce it (companies going bust, jobs lost etc) and no incentive for the public to switch to it, and those who for the past few years had been running their vehicles on this greener fuel have nowhere to buy it from, meaning they have to switch BACK to using Fossil fuel. But the Green Brigade have been VERY quiet about that, where are the protests and the outcry. Nah!
Is this one action in line with a Government which spouts its crap about how it cares for the trees and little fluffy birdies?. I think not. Look at the actions of those in power, rather than believing everything they say, you'll soon see a distinct difference between the two.
Personally, i'm a natural mimic and will just follow the example set to me by those in power. Whenever I see the Houses of Parliament, its always lit up with batteries of floodlights and almost every internal window is lit, even at 3AM.
Maybe the Government should start by saving energy (and the planet) in their own 'home' before lecturing us to do the same in ours?, they could start by turning a few lights off in the middle of the night in those many empty rooms.....just a thought.
Do what most of the rational thinking population do and go with whatever is the cheapest, and if the four horseman of the apocalypse hunt you down, then you can blame me. Put the money you save into enjoying life rather than worrying about how many KW/H you are using!.All anybody has to do is not have children, and reduce the world population to a sustainable level.
If people stopped having Children then where is the next generation of tax payers going to come from?. Is swampy going to bring them from cloud cuckoo land on his bike?
The last thing the Government wants is to reduce the number of children, because over time it will be effectiveloy reducing the number of working age tax payers. This means that in future years and faced with less income, MP's will have to do unmentionable things like reducing their number, reducing their expenses and stop poking its nose into other countries' affairs.
Besides, a growing number of people in todays society see raising children as a legitimate means of gaining benefits and if some of these posts here are to be believed, a viable and genuine means of giving up working for a living in an unhappy or unfilling job and instead embark in a new career sitting in front of the TV whilst they leave the burden (and expense) on the tax payer in order to support and reward their child rearing activities.
So two fairly influential parties are set to lose out should your idea ever be implemented - so do you still see it catching on?.
Personally, I agree with your idea. This country has already become some kind of 'Village of the Damned' with kids having far more rights than adults and often running wild and feral with their parents too drunk or inexperienced to do anything about them. Not to mention those 19 and 20 year old single mums wondering around with their 3 toddlers all from 3 different fathers.
However as much as I like your idea, I can't really see it happening.I will be very happy to pay someone £30 so they do not have children"Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich0 -
