Buying TV from supermarket

Hi,

I have found a good price on a tv from Sainsburys. Couple of questions:

Are supermarkets good places to buy tvs from?
How long is the warranty offered? I've looked everywhere but can't find out. Some places (M&S etc) offer 5 years but I presume it isn't the same with supermarkets.

Thanks for your help

I would disagree with that - most supermarkets and electrical stores give either one or two years only. That is so they can advertise low "headline" prices. They then charge you £200 or more to extend it to 5 years.

Tesco, for example, have only 1 TV on their site with more than a "standard" warranty - a make that I have never heard of.
Their own extended warranties range from £220 to an eye-watering £370 !!!!

I bought my TV from John Lewis, their headline price was more than anyone else, but when extended warranty was factored in - no difference. Just read this site to get an idea of who gives the better service when things go wrong !

We bought from Ritcher sounds and well pleased with our tv and the service. their 5 year warranty is 10% of the price of the tv, so our TV £599 + 10% £59 = £658 was the cheapest warranty around.

The tv's you have seen in Sainsbury's are discontinued lines. Just to let you know.

I to am a Richer Sounds fan. The staff are top notch, knowing the product, let you 'mess round' with it first, giving you a hand to the car, offering a 5 year guarantee for what is really a notional sum of money and offering great after service.

For me, now up there with John Lewis. I wouldn't even contemplate using supermarkets and would avoid Dixons/Currys and Comet like the plague, being the antithesis of Richer Sounds.

Total cost including 5 year guarantee is the only factor you need worry about. You should not really be buying a TV for decent money without a 5 year guarantee.

I believe under the Sale of Goods Act, a TV should have a certain life expectancy which far exceeds the guarantee period.
Those buying a 5 year guarantee are wasting their money.
The Sale of Goods Act gives a life expectancy of 6 years for major items like TV, Washing Machine etc.
Warranties are the biggest rip off ever!
