Advice on what would be their best options ie housing?

Options
Hiya im posting this question after a chat with my sister and her partner. He has been in the army 4 years now living in single accomodation. My sister and him are very serious and are now wanting to make the next step of living together, getting used to bills/saving and eventually preparing for children. I was just wondering if they would get any help with housing from the army?
They are going to sign up to the local HA but obviously due to not having children yet wouldnt get very many points. The other option i guess is private renting?

Any advice would be fantastic

Thanks in advance
Jo :o

    Hi there

As far as Im aware the army don't help with housing unless you are married... Im sure someone will be along soon with full details/explanation

  • Thank you for replying, i did mention to them i thought it may turn out that they couldnt get any help due to not being married/children etc. My dad was in the army from 16-40 and my parents have been together since they were 14 and i recall my mum previously mention that her and other wifes often felt (and were seen?) as excess baggage by the MOD. So i imagine its even worse as "just" a girlfriend.
Well at least they both work so may just be able to afford private renting

    Thanks

They'd have to be married or at least official civil partnership to be allowed to rent a married quarter.

you need to be married to get army housing-hence the name, married quarters.

They could rent near his base but wouldnt get any removals/renting help and bear in mind he could be reposted etc.

wives are'nt generally seen as excess baggage in my experience- i love being an army wife!

They haven't been called 'married quarters' for about 10 years.

Service Family Accommodation is available to personnel who have a spouse or civil partner.

There are a few exceptions to this rule, but nothing to assist your sis.

Also single personnel in private housing can qualify for some moving expenses.

I cba looking up the references, tell your sisters OH to get of his @rse and find out the information he needs, if he really wants to move in with her.

They could try to apply for a surplus quarter where he is based, but we were on the list for years before we were married and never got one - we were entitled to one and got the keys a few weeks before our wedding date, and moved in just after we got married.

There are no surplus quarters these days, with the sell off to Annington Homes many years ago the stocks dropped dramatically. Even those with a valid reason for occupancy can have to wait on occasions. However notwithstanding this the rules are categoric and no waivable, you have to be married or have undertaken a civil ceremony

Of course your son could turn gay, take up with a man and then claim he isn't getting a quarter due to discrimination. The pillow biters always get preference in case their human rights are abused :-)
  • Thanks for all the replys. They have decided to put there names down on HA lists but look into private renting untill they have children/marry

    Thanks for all the help

They have to get married. They can't have one just by having children.
