What Clegg did today was show us honesty.
He made a short and sweet speech, full of honesty, after coming crashing down to earth....thinking he was going to get something like 80 seats. Instead, he got even less seats than the last election!
There was nothing in it for himself, or the lib dems today, with what he said.
If Clegg want's power, there is a very easy route right now, of which, that easy route will be practically begging him to come on board. Today, he basically may have cut himself out, saying what he did.
For him to say "no" to that, and to say he sticks by what he says, and in the name of fairness, the party with the most votes should get the first crack, is not doing HIM any favours....apart from showing honesty and integrity.
He's the first leader to come out after the election, and after the pledges, to actually carry on with what he was stating beforehand, even though it may cost him power. It's refreshing.0 -
it's political tactics unfortunately not decency - it will all pan out in the next few days
I'm quite sure that people who voted Tory would see Nick Clegg as decent for supporting Cameron. I am not sure that Lib Dem members (who he is supposed to represent) would have quite the same opinion.
I'm sure the Tories saw Ramsay MacDonald as a "decent chap".Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0 -

What political tactics?
Setting himself up on record saying something....then reverting on it a few days later?
What political tactic is that? Shooting yourself in both feet and making yourself look like a complete liar?
Clegg has stated througout, vote with your heart. He has never got involved with the lib lab coalition, that was ALL coming from labour supporters....and it's now coming from labour themselves now they have lost out.
So what political tactics has he carried out today?0 -
I reckon Clegg will aim to form an alliance with the Conservatives. It's the easiest way for him to leverage power and the Conservatives will be desperate.Happy chappy0

Labour are dead to the Lib Dems - together they wouldn't have a majority.
he has no interest in them. they offer him nothing.
however, the tories have more to offer...

What is going above my head?
This is what he has said all along. He stated this before the election and he's stating it after the election. That is what I am talking about.
So tell me, what's going above my head here?0 -
Can anyone explain exactly why the Tories are against PR? It seems to favour them rather than Labour.0

Libs did not get enough seats for them to be the king maker in a Lib/Lab pact. It would the small independents as a Lib/Lab pact would not have a majority. Also it would be madness to jump into bed with brown who the majority of the public dislike. A Least wait until he is forced to resign before considering anything with Labour.0

Torys now said they will consider it as they will do what they can to form a stable government.Tory sources not ruling out offering PR - they could of course offer a referendum to do deal with the Libs but campaign against it
By, by Labour.:j:j0 -
and here is the tactical play that he is Clegg is hoping for.........Libs did not get enough seats for them to be the king maker in a Lib/Lab pact.
