High CPU Usage

My Dell Inspiron1300 Laptop has over the past couple of days become really slow. Up until the weekend it would boot up ready to use within a matter of seconds, now it takes up to 4 or 5 mins. CPU usage runs at about 100% for 5 or 10 mins once it is ready, and the hard drive activity light is more or less constantly on. after this CPU usage fluctates between 4% and 80% or so even when i'm not doing anything on it.

Does anyone have any idea what has happened please and what steps i should take to resolve?

Thanks in advance

if you open the windows task manager (right click on your task bar) and select the processes tab you can see which processes are taking up the cpu usage.

have you scanned for viruses / malware etc?

  • Thanks. I have scanned for viruses using mcafee which i always have on. Dont have any.

One of the processes high is IEXPLORE.EXE although it fluctuates.
SYSTEM is another. Yesterday there were some other ones like SVCHOST or something and Mcshield

the processes you list are known apps, but what spyware checking and things did you do?

    McAfee will not find Malware

do a Hijackthis log for me and post it here

    http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

make sure you run Hijackthis from its own folder after installing it

follow the instructions on how to run it

Click the Save Log button to create a file named Hijackthis.log. A dialog box will pop up. Use it to select the location where you will save the log. Close the program. Return to the Forum and reply to your original post. Open the Log in Notepad. Highlight the entire contents. Copy and paste the contents of the HijackThis log into your post. Wait for help.

We found our high CPU usage was being caused by a programme called WinXPDisableZero. It seems to have been installed with our Belkin wireless network card, but was not picked up by Avast as being a virus or other nasty. Instructions for getting rid of it appear athttp://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=45522
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

I believe you have McAfee SpamKiller installed and running? I had same problem as you after one of their upgrades. Googled around and lots of people had same problem. CPU usage on mine was well over 80% plus. Uninstalled SpamKiller element only of the 2005 Security Suite and problem was resolved straight away.

More info here but plenty more on Google
