Well, for Firefox users, AddBlockPlus seems to get rid of the rubbish down the left hand side.
You don't get the space back, just leaves it blank - but it's tidy.
Here are some screenshots.

EDIT
There's a Firefox addon that does a better job.
It's here:-http://www.seotools.com/hide-google-options/Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
If your browser is chrome or firefox you can use userscript
you will need to install greasmonkey to use the userscript
more on this and where to get it at downloadsquad
Already have greasemonkey installed and I have to say that script works perfectly for me.
Ahhhh no more new google for me. :cool:0 -
Having managed to get the basic version of google back and rid of the everything sidebar is there any way anybody has managed to get the search uk pages only option back. Sometimes (say when buying something) I don't want to trawl all the sites just ones from the uk. If the only way to get this back is to go back to the everything sidebar I'll be off to another search engine!0

Bing also has a side bar.
Personally, I like it. Being able to tweak your search results right from the results page makes Google much more useful and powerful. I suspect that many of those complaining might miss the new look if they actually tried out some of its features. It's not perfect though; Google need to get rid of the now-redundant options across the top of the page.
I've been using Bing for the past few months, but with Google's redesign I might be switching back.0
