no can talk on talktalk

Please Please Please if anyone is looking for 'cheap' broadband avoid talktalk. It is one week since I have have been without service and I am told that it will be at least another week before I am likely to get another modem to try. An engineer can call if I am prepared to pay him £50 per hour. There appears to be no way to access head office other than writing, and there is no named individual to write to. How are they getting away with this stuff? I want to sleep and wake at my house doing my assignment rahter than at the Uni library.

    Good luck!

I colleague of mine was unable to get broadband or phone calls for four weeks.

Needless to say, TalkTalk still billed her for the period that she was disconnected. shaking.gif

If you explain exactly what the problem is, then perhaps someone can offer you help on these forums. Unless your line has a fault then you don't need an engineer for broadband problems. Can you not borrow a spare router in the meantime-plenty of perfectly good ones available for £20 or less-you don't have to use a TT supplied model.

Hi, we have had same problem. It would appear to have happened when TalkTalk took over the phone lines from BT - without advising us that what they were going to do. Our modem stopped working, BT says our line doesn't exist but TalkTalk claim the problem is not their end. They wanted to send an engineer out at a cost of £50 to check router. My other half went to PC World & bought a new router - surprise, surprise it works! While in PC World, we met someone else who has had the same problem. Now you can't tell me that all these different routers have stopped working for Tiscali/TalkTalk customers for no reason! It has cost £80 for a new router plus the cost of calls (approx 1 hour/night for last week) We have had a refund of £10 as we have had no broad band for 2 weeks but we still can't get into Tiscali on-line billing account to find out what charges have been incurred - advised by a Customer Rep that these have all been frozen due to transfer from Tiscali to TalkTalk. It would be good to hear from TalkTalk Rep as to what the problem is? Phone calls have passed us from pillar to post via the globe with no admission of what the problem is.

It sounds to me like the router settings probably needed changing rather than the routers. When setting up a new router there is often an "auto discovery" option which means it will find all the settings automatically. If they were different on Tiscali from TalkTalk then that would explain why it stopped working.

We tried that - that is what TalkTalk had us doing every night on the hour long phone calls to technical support! My other half knows a bit about computers and told them that we had tried this before but we had to go through the procedure. Usually they got frustrated, put us on hold while they checked with a colleague before the phone connection was cut off!

So what exactly failed? Did it achieve sync but you couldn't access the web or didn't it even get that far. I did have a search when I first saw this to check the settings but couldn't find anything reliable for Tiscali as they are history but I did notice TalkTalk apparently need a 1432 MTU which is quite low.

we could get all the required settings saved in the router as per the tech instructions but it still would not connect to the internet .DSL light was on showing line available.
it would apear that during the talk talk take over from the original BT line they may have spiked the router some how and it could not negotiate the connection with the user name and password from the router.
had to go out and buy a new router as i did not have one form talk talk being a tiscali customer taken over by talk talk. this has now solved my connection problem has any one else suffered the same?

I don't know anything about Tiscali but it sounds like they maybe locked down the routers they handed out to only work on Tiscali so when you got swapped to TalkTalk it wouldn't work. If that is the case then the TT reps should have know it for sure.
