First year I have grown cauli but to me they look fine.

The letuce looks like its going to seed but it's not something I grow so I could be wrong?

Do you still have the packet which your seeds came in? I usually go by the harvest date on the packet

When did you plant the lettuce? What have you got them planted in?

Re the cauli, google image growing cauliflowers and you can see how they grow that may give you some idea how they grow?

If you let lettuce produce seed it will start to die back afterwards as its done its job. At a guess they've been in the warm too long (sown too early) and have gone through their life cycle very quickly because of it. The good news is that lettuce generally has a short lifecycle so there is plenty of time to grow more. Once they get to about a thumb length in size start to plant them outside (and start the war with the slugs!) - the cooler outside will slow their growth and give you longer before they bolt to seed.

The cauliflower look to me like they want planting out as well - harden them off by putting them outside during the day for a couple of days and then when you have a mildish spell forecast get them planted out.

Unless you are in the far north or are in a particularly cold hollow somewhere, you can certainly start to think about having them out of the greenhouse during the day - having them under glass on hot sunny days is going to be a bit hot for cabbage/lettuce family plants in May. The cauliflower is definitely looking a bit heat stressed, and as I said it looks like the lettuce have rushed through their growing cycle. I'd nip out the seed head on the lettuce, and then have them both hardening off outside during the day until the weekend (bring them in over night) and then if its not forecasting a frost definitely get the cauliflower out in its final positions, and given that the lettuce may be too far gone I'd put that out as well - at best you slow it down enough to eat some of it, at worst you lose it to cold rather than losing it to seed.

  • I agree with pp, caulis dont really grow well in head, they prefer the cooler conditions :)
I have grown mine straight into the bed outside so are a bit behind yours but are doing well :)

Your lettuce looks more like spinach to me.

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!
