Security enabled wireless router and now losing connection...

I’ve been happily using my virgin modem and Linksys router for a couple of years now without it being security enabled – I know BAD St0lli!
So a couple of weeks ago I decided to security enable it. Ever since I’ve done that it keeps losing the connection to the internet and I have to keep reconnecting by clicking on the wireless icon in the tool bar, right clicking, selecting view available wireless connections and selecting my network. Its really frustrating as it’s very random on the length of time it will last without losing the connection but usually 15mins is the max time I get.
At the moment the wireless devices we have in the house are my laptop, my son’s PS3, his pc and my iPhone. However it doesn’t seem to make any difference if just one thing is being used or all of them the result is the same!
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening please?I have tried resetting the router and that doesn't seem to have made a difference.
Its a WRT54GS. I'm not sure what you mean by parameters but looking at the setup guide the internet configuration type is DHCP and the wireless network mode is mixed. I've assigned a wireless network name as it was set at the default.
Does that answer the question re parameters?
Thanks for taking the time to reply
Not really. What exactly did you do when you enabled wireless security? What settings did you choose from the various options available? What type of encryption etc.etc.etc? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I’m still having problems!
I’ve just changed the wireless channel from 11 to 6.
Everything else is as below:
Internet setup = automatic configuration – DHCP
Then in wireless network I have
Wireless Network mode = mixed
Wireless Network Name (SSID) = name I’ve input
Wireless Channel = 6 – 2.437GHz (I’ve changed this from 11)
Wireless SSID Broadcast = enable
Security Mode = WPA Personal
WPA Algorithims = TKIP
Group key renewal = 3600 seconds
Everything else is the default which came with the router.
Hope this helps in getting this very frustrating problem sorted.

Vista/XP/W7? Any other wireless kit near the laptop? Where is the router in relation to the laptop? Is power saving turned off on the wireless card?
Have you set it to automatically connect when in range, and not connect to other networks? Are you letting windows manage wireless?

What channels and strength is everything else using/got?!!

The laptop and iphone are in one room downstairs and router is another. Sons PS3 and computer are upstairs.
Both our computers use windows XP.
Not sure about power saving turned on wireless card - how do I check?
It's only set up to automatically connect to my network.

Sorry if my questions/answers are a bit naive but I really don't have any IT experience apart from as an end user....

What is the reported signal strength & signal quality on the various devices now that you have enabled WPA?Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

Signal strength varies between excellent and very good. Son doesn't seem to experience any problems with his PS3 or computer. Also my iPhone is fine so my powers of deduction lead me to it being a problem with my laptop.
I keep getting error messages of ActiveX control and corefoundation.dll couldn't be found. Can this possibly be linked or is it a red herring?

My Virgin cable modem had been losing connection every day,I thought it was to do with my new wireless router.....
Anyway... I got Virgins engineer to visit. He said that there were various isssues nationally and instead of resetting the Virgin modem via taking out the power lead was to unscrew the coaxial cable , leave for 30 sec and connect again....... hasnt dropped connection yet....... 3 days and countingI have nothing better to do!!!!
