Security enabled wireless router and now losing connection...

I’ve been happily using my virgin modem and Linksys router for a couple of years now without it being security enabled – I know BAD St0lli! :o

So a couple of weeks ago I decided to security enable it. Ever since I’ve done that it keeps losing the connection to the internet and I have to keep reconnecting by clicking on the wireless icon in the tool bar, right clicking, selecting view available wireless connections and selecting my network. Its really frustrating as it’s very random on the length of time it will last without losing the connection but usually 15mins is the max time I get.

At the moment the wireless devices we have in the house are my laptop, my son’s PS3, his pc and my iPhone. However it doesn’t seem to make any difference if just one thing is being used or all of them the result is the same! :(

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening please?

You could try resetting the router (At the back will be a very small hole with a rest button inside.) With it switched on, keep the button pressed for around 30 seconds until it resets itself. Youll have to put all the settings back in as all settings will be defaulted.

Thanks I'll give that a go. Does that mean I should leave it without security or try adding it again and see if it works correctly?

    Sorry if that's a dumb question :o

You really REALLY should have security switched on (main reason being that if anyone uses your router for illegal downloading or even worse (!) you could end up in serious trouble)

If it fails to work properly then youll need a new router

I'll try the resetting option first and then if that fails I'll buy another router... Thanks for your help and advice

I would try upgrading the firmware to the latest version before buying a new router. Instructions should be in the manual or on a CD that came with it.
  • If it only effects some of your computers, check for updated drivers for the wireless interfaces.

Also ensure the name of your wireless network in unique.

I doubt if resetting the router, updating the firmware or buying a new router will resolve this problem. It sounds more likely that wireless security has been configured incorrectly. What model Linksys router is it and exactly what parameters have you configured in the wireless set-up?

I have tried resetting the router and that doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Its a WRT54GS. I'm not sure what you mean by parameters but looking at the setup guide the internet configuration type is DHCP and the wireless network mode is mixed. I've assigned a wireless network name as it was set at the default.

Does that answer the question re parameters?

Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

If it connects sometimes then it's not the security as that would stop it all together.

Change the wireless channel it sounds like you are getting wireless interferance. Happens all the time these days. If someone in your area has a router on the same channel you often get problems. Use 1, 6 or 11.

I'll give this a try as well - thank you!
