do you need to re apply for the disabled student assistance?

Options
Hi all, i posted a while ago for a uni mate who doesnt have the internet, and got some great responses regarding the disabled students support.

So i am back with another question on her behalf, she only applied late ie March for 09-10 and has had assessment and the likes, just awaiting the report to be done, but does she need to reapply for 10-11 or will it just be taken from the report and on going?

Thanks (again!)

You only have one assessment, she won't need to apply again as the report covers the length of her course - one lot of equipment to last the length of the course and any yearly allowances such as internet will be covered for the length of the course.

I got letter october 09 saying I needed to do another needs assessment to cover me of 09/10 (I started uni 08/09). I contacted the LEA and was told that the letters are produced automatically by SLC but as you only get one lot of equipment throughout your degree, unless your needs have substantially changed you do not need to apply again.

Sounds like something I'd say, MrsManda, usually followed by "The system is !!!!!!!!"

The LEA person was a little more tactful than that - she said that the LEA had no control over the issue, that the SLC was aware and she could only hope that they would sort out their system shortly ;)

I had to reapply each year for the non-medical helper allowance. IIRC like the normal student loan application, it was a an abridged application, mainly concerned with how many hours I would require that session as that changed from year to year (as did the cost per hour).

So if you only have equipment, you probably don't need to reapply. But any ongoing help (including Other Costs -internet, sundries, etc) needs to be reapplied for each year.

Non-medical helper I can understand how you'd need to reapply each year as there are likely to be differences in the time and thus the cost. The allowances which are paid direct to the student such as internet costs and an allowance for photocopying/books doesn't need to be applied for each year.

    Hi all,
I am about to go to uni (September 2010) and literally got my offer of a uni place today so....

How do I go about applying for DSA, please? I am happy to have any assessments they want plus provide Dr and Educational Psychologist documents. All help so gratefully received so thanks in advance...

In the first instance, contact the University - they should have a disability office that will be able to advice you, arrange assessments, help you apply for the DSA and coordinate with your course/department if you require any adjustments. Details will probably be on the uni website. Failing that, if you indicated you have a disability in your application, they may contact you themselves.
