Nexus One and Vodafone retentions
conspiracy
Hi All,
My contract with Vodafone was up at the end of last month (April) so I thought I'd phone them up and see what deal I could get on the Nexus one.
Being that I'd been a customer of there's for 12 years!! and have an average bill of about £50 I thought I'd be able to get a deal......oh how wrong I was
They told me that with the contract I was on (300mins, unlimited txt with 500GB mobile internet at £35 a month on a 18 month contract) the Nexus one would cost £59 on a upgrade.
I asked what deals they could do taking into account I am a long standing customer that has spent in excess of £7200 in 12 years with them. The answer?.....No deal at all!!
The advisor said that I could only get the phone from them so there was no deal.
I was somewhat shocked that for the sake of £59 they where prepared to lose a good customer so I said I would cancel.
The advisor then said that I would need to send a letter to cancel my contract. Now as far as I know if you signed up on the phone 12 years ago you should be able to cancel on the phone. The conversation went back and forth a bit and the vodafone advisor eventually relented and said he'd send me a PAC code.
Absolutely terrible customer service!!
Anyway the point to my rant I hear you ask
Has anyone else been able to get the Nexus One through retentions or upgrade?
And if so what deal did they get?
Thanks in advance
Paul.

Cost of Nexus One on Vodafone with the 18 month deal you mentioned: 59+35*18 = £689.
Cost of unlocked Nexus One direct from Google on a T-Mobile 1 month SIM only contract (350 mins, 300 texts, internet booster):
Phone: $529
+ Delivery: $25
= $554 = £366
+ VAT: £61.40
= £427.40
+ contract for 18 months: £270
Total = £697.40
Looks like the contract their offering is pretty much for the value of the phone + minutes etc. But what's the point in being locked in for 18 months when you can get similar with a 1 month contract?
There's not much between the contracts on offer, but I used T-Mobile as an example as their FUP states a 3GB internet limit for Android phones (may cost £5pm more than normal internet (1GB limit), but they seem happy to waive this for a quick sale).
I have had a Nexus One since January, and I wouldn't recommend using on a contract with a restrictive 500MB FUP (especially since there's posts on here about Vodafone charging for going over this, despite what the sales people say). It's constantly connected and I tend to use at least 1GB per month.0 -

You might be wrong there as your taking the price as if they were buying it in the US Im not sure if google would ship it to the UK if they did the OP would liable for import tax.
Expansys sell it for £579.99 inc VAT0 -
I bought mine in January from the US. The phone + delivery cost then was £366.58.
The courier (DHL) then sends you a bill for VAT + applicable taxes about a month later. For me, this was £61.30.
A couple of points about this amount:
- It may have been when VAT was 15% - I can't remember when it changed back to 17.5%
- It may include other customs rates as well. People weren't sure at first if there was no import tax on Nexus Ones because they were phones, or if it was something like 6% because they included GPS. I can't remember what my £61.30 covered precisely (I'm looking at my credit card statement, not the actual bill from DHL).
One thing I can say with 100% certainty is DO NOT PAY MORE THAN £500 FOR AN UNLOCKED NEXUS ONE. You are being ripped off - anyone selling one in this country is reselling a phone they bought from Google, with a large margin. Buy it from Google yourself.
This isn't some semi-dodgy cheap import workaround - currently the legitimate way to purchase an unlocked Nexus One is through Google from the US.
Google has recieved a lot of negative press about their marketing method, so I doubt it will stay like this forever.0 -
The £61.30 includes a small processing change from DHL. I agree don't buy from middleman when google sell direct. The order process is simple and really quick. If you order from middleman you pay more, it takes longer and you risk not getting it.
I have the nexus one and love it. The only small thing is the battery needs charged daily. It is not just a phone though it does everything. Its so much better than the iphone. So so much better.
Get Spottify and a pair of Soundwise m8 earphones and you have the perfect music system too.0 -
Google Nexus is classed the same as the Iphone it's not a phone we are allowed to discount. The upgrading team aren't being awkward though I think they should have phrased it a bit better. I work in a retail store and if you try and discount it, it just blocks it and as far as I'm aware it's same for Online and Telesales.
I wonder if Google told us like Apple did to all the network that these are the price of the plans and this is what you will charge for the phones.
Only thing I can suggest is that you trade your old phone in, one of my customers did that and got £75 for his old phone which saved him paying for the Nexus. It depends on what phone you have at the moment.March Wins

I would advise you ask about the HTC desire which is very similar to the Nexus one and as it is on all networks you won't have this 'we can't discount' crap.0
