    Suits:

I only have experience with shirts and trousers in Bangkok, India and HK. First thing to realise is that the vast majority of the staff are salesmen, pure and simple.

They will pander to you, tell you anything, promise anything to get a sale. If you find some problem they will promise to fix it either later that day or for tomorrow, and it will probably then be worse than it is now! They know that you need to leave in a few days, and they already have either all or a good part of the money.

You need to know exactly what you want and how to thoroughly check it. I know how much there is to either go wrong, or not be quite right, with a shirt or with trousers. Getting a suit made to a standard I'd be happy with would be so much more difficult.

By all means try a shirt or two as a souvenir, but remember that they know you will leave in a day or two, and they don't need your trade again.. there are plenty more people coming in tomorrow!!

The reassurance and safeguard that some quality control expert has looked over the shirts or suits to ensure a decent standard is an excellent reason to buy from M&S etc etc...

There is a luxurious YMCA with good views of the harbour, but expect to pay a lot unless you want to share a room with others! The suites there are very nice.

I'm originally from HK. Everytime someone asks me where they should stay in Hong Kong I'd recommend YMCA in Tsim Sha Tsui. It's a YMCA 'hotel' and I doubt you'll have to share room with strangers. It's cheap for where it is - top location with everything on the door step. They have their own swimming pool & restaurants. Be sure you stay on the Kowloon side of harbour because it's better view than the views looked from the HK island. Peninsula is a top hotel to stay if you want to spend money which is only next door to the YMCA. Also, it is recommended that you have the high tea or get to the Felix Bar on 28th floor at the Peninsula even though you are not staying in the hotel.

If you are only there for 3 days, make a day free for Lantau Island for the big budda & countryside walking. I'd also recommend shopping in Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui) & Central/ Causeway Bay, Tram to the peak, Star Ferry (or Chinese-style tour boat if you want to pay more & longer ride) by Victoria harbour. Lang Kwai Fong in Central for drinks.

The Hong Kong Ibis is cheap, clean and centrally located. I usually stay there.

Cheapest (non-refundable) rate is usually HK$506 (~£43) per night, for two people in a double room.

There are couple of coffee shops just outside too, for cheap and delicious meals.

We stayed here - booked by Cathay Pacific as part of a package.

Very good hotel. In Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui), short walk to Metro and the Star Ferry.

I've stayed there before, it's a great hotel, in a great location. Just a bit pricey at ~HK$1500 a night.

We stayed at hte Peninsula which was wonderful but very expensive. We wanted to stay there because it is part of the history of Hong Kong but right next door is hte YMCA in a fabulous position. We used to go there for breakfast and it was a very good value buffet. The islands are nice but most of hte action is around central and Kowloon and you will spend quite a lot of time travelling back and forth and I am not sure what time the ferries run until.

If going to Lammu visit the giant Buddah but pass on the lunch in the monastory

The giant Buddha is on Lantau, the same island as the airport. Lamma is somewhere different.

Otherwise I second everything you say: the YMCA I mentioned (I think it is the Salisbury) is the one next door to the Peninsula.

Have a look at the Metropark, Causeway Bay. 200 yards from Tin Hau MTR, harbour view rooms have an open view across Victoria Park over to Kowloon. free internet access too.

Alternatively, the Excelsior has an excellent position (very near Causeway Bay MTR) and its Harbour view rooms have an unobstructed view over to Kowloon. Internet access is at least £ 10 per day though. At 7-11 or similar you can buy PCCW inernet access card for about £2 per day, or there are lots of free government wi-fi spots.

I was also going to recommend the MetroPark at Causeway Bay photos of the hotel:- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/djleekee/Sanyo%20HD1010%20Photo/Hong%20Kong%20Sept%202009/SANY7036.jpg

Worth it just for the view from the roof and that pool. Im sure we booked via TripAdvisor link and it was around £20pp per night! Bargain!

We recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza at Causeway Bay - used the Friends & Family link posted on this site. Loved the hotel but unfortunately no harbour views.

Wow thanks so much all of you for the help and advice - MetroPark at Causeway Bay sounds like a good option then. As does the YMCA, will definitely take a look into both in more detail. Peninsula would be amazing I'm sure but I struggle to justify the cost for essentially a bed!!

    Thanks again all.
