Hotels in Hong Kong

Hi All,

My husband to be and I are going over to see my sister in Austalia later this year and have decided we quite fancy a stop for 3 nights in Hong Kong on our way over. I think to do that we need to fly with Cathay Pacific as that seems to their stop off point (we're on route to Perth) and I've priced flights up for when we go which is likely to be November.

My question really is, has anyone got any advice on nice hotels to stay in Hong Kong? OH wants to stay in one with a good view of the harbour which I know will push the price up but he's adamant this is a must for him! :)

Any advice on hotels or even top things to do would be great.

Thanks so much in advance.

Ask the airline: you may well find a deal that includes hotel for little more than the air fare! Several airlines offer flights to Australia with a Hong Kong stop-over, so ask around.

There is a luxurious YMCA with good views of the harbour, but expect to pay a lot unless you want to share a room with others! The suites there are very nice.

Otherwise, why not stay on an island? Check out Lamma: just a 45-minute boat ride from the city centre, with lovely seafood restaurants and waterside bars, great opportunities for country walks, and absolutely no motor vehicles! Accommodation there is cheap, comfortable, and easy to find.

Good tip, actually thinking about it we did a similar thing when we went to New York a few years ago. For some reason I was under the impression that it was only Cathay Pacific who stopped in Hong Kong, goodness knows where I dreamt that from!

Lamma sounds great! Will go have a look into that too. Thanks for the advice.

We stayed at hte Peninsula which was wonderful but very expensive. We wanted to stay there because it is part of the history of Hong Kong but right next door is hte YMCA in a fabulous position. We used to go there for breakfast and it was a very good value buffet. The islands are nice but most of hte action is around central and Kowloon and you will spend quite a lot of time travelling back and forth and I am not sure what time the ferries run until.

If going to Lammu visit the giant Buddah but pass on the lunch in the monastory

I've stopped at the YMCA and it was great - really clean, had the same views of the more expensive Peninsula next door (if you picked a room with a view). It is in an excellent position for transport links. The views there of the harbour are amazing! I ate out so can't comment on the food. Handy for Star Ferry over to Victoria Peak and the nightly 'A Symphony of Lights' Great!!

Last year I stopped in the Holiday Inn on Nathan Rd, not that far from the YMCA but not much of a view from most hotels on that road. Clean & decent size rooms for HK - some can be on the small side. You might get a good deal from this link on Intercontinental group of hotels which include, Holiday Inns: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1535105

A good website for planning a trip to HK is: http://www.discoverhongkong.com/uk/index.jsp

I love HK & would go back anytime!
    Happy travels

THe Budda is on Lantau Island and there is a great cable car ride from Tung Chung near the airpport, well worth a go.

This is brilliant thanks all so much for your tips and advice. It's our first time obviously and if I'm honest I don't know too much about what there is to do there but OH has always wanted to go and see the sights and lights!

Have a look at the Metropark, Causeway Bay. 200 yards from Tin Hau MTR, harbour view rooms have an open view across Victoria Park over to Kowloon. free internet access too.

Alternatively, the Excelsior has an excellent position (very near Causeway Bay MTR) and its Harbour view rooms have an unobstructed view over to Kowloon. Internet access is at least £ 10 per day though. At 7-11 or similar you can buy PCCW inernet access card for about £2 per day, or there are lots of free government wi-fi spots.

    .

On the contrary, I priced up rooms here in September and they came out at around $126 (AUD) per night, which given the exchange rate currently, must be around 50 quid. Given the location, that's pretty good! As a former HK resident of 14 years, I'd recommend the YMCA wholeheartedly. That said, if you want to blow the budget, there will be plenty of fabulous hotels, with prices to match if this is a once in a lifetime type trip.

Thanks all again, am going to do some investigating of the hotels suggested. OH thinks he might fancy the Peninsula - looks amazing but expensive! Will see if he can be persuaded against that! :)
As an aside, has anyone had suits made whilst there? He's got an idea that he might like to have one made but am guessing like everything there will be some good places and others not so good so if anyone has any recommendations that would be fantastic.
Thanks again for all the help.

I stayed at the Metropark Causeway bay, there were great views from the harbour view rooms and the swimming pool. I got a good price at the time on the British airways website. I think your best bet would be a hotel such as this where you can actually book a harbour view room.
