For some reason yesterday when people call me its saying im on the phone even when im not so could this be a problem with my Desire or with My network Orange?
Its only started yesterday and when i then turn the phone off and on again that seems to sort the problem out.
Any ideas guys please.

Check your phones call log. Have you been phoning people by pressing buttons accidentally in your pocket / bag?0

this problem has been documented previously on the net.
by first impressions i think you are in a weak 3g signal area and your data connection is happening over 2g / gprs. so unless your network (orange) has implemented the dual transfer mode (DTM) the data transfer will keep happening in the background continuously in android phones or iphone (apps / weather widget / pusk email / facebook etc or any application that gets constantly updated in the background, which will be MANY on newish smart phones like the desire) then in this situation YOUR network cant handle both voice calls and data at the same time if they havent implemented the DTM on their network.
from what i have read on this topic (bearing in mind that i am no techie and just interested in using my gadgets so read a bit on such issues), vodafone is the MAYBE only network to have implemented (i read they were experimenting so not sure if they actually implemented this yet all over their network) the DTM so people on anyother network using smart phones are stuffed if they are in low 3g signal areas and have apps or widgets or pushemail constantly accessing the network in the background via the data connection and since the networks which havent implemented the DTM are incapable of handling both data and voice at the same time (excluding 3g connection i am told) over 2g / gprs etc and the data traffic gets a preference because it is already in use and you never get the all important call that you are waiting for and it goes to voicemail!!!!
all these problems because some numpties at your network (i am told every other network other than vodafone [that is if they implemented DTM]!!!! has the same issues regarding DTM not being enabled although i am awaiting confirmation from three network about this issue whether they have implemented DTM in areas where the 3g signal is not strong)
if anyone has up to date information on DTM status of UK networks please let us know. everyone please pressurise your networks to implement this DTM so that all people with smartphones can properly access the network and get 24/7 access to voice calls as voice calls should always take priority over data stuff as it is a phone in the first place! any network selling smart phones and not implementing DTM in my view is mis selling a device on the network which is not fit for use as a phone reliably as all networks will have weak 3g signal areas and any smart phone in such areas will get bumped instead to 2g / gprs etc and if apps are working in the back ground (which they will be in most smartphones) then the voice calls wont be put through and will get diverted to voicemail instead.
one word of caution, my opinion is that of a layperson who has read some fluffy stuff on the net so dont take my word as the gospel standard. but i think i have done my bit of reading into this issue and think this is what is causing the problem.
if the network doesnt implement DTM then you are stuffed as your calls will keep getting diverted in weak 3g areas of which there will be many!
i might face this problem too as i read about this only after placing my orders for the desire phone so am waiting to see if i meet your fate! (tmobile orange 3 etc share masts i am told and i have ordered desire from 3 network so i guess i will be swimming in the same sea as you!!!)
To avoid that situation i am already on the case and badgering the network about this issue of DTM implementation. this will affect people where their networks share masts for lowering costs i think (3, tmobile, orange, virgin etc share masts) so i GUESS even if one of them implements it and the others dont then as they share masts all over many customers will still be affected by this issue if they havent all implemented DTM i GUESS.
If you have a good 3g or HSDPA then this wont be a problem. but will be a problem if you are having 2g/ gprs etc showing on your handset.
This isnt a handset issue, this is the way the UK mobile networks are presently designed, who ever the d1mw1ts were that implemented the present system doesnt understand the problem that this causes with any smartphone. they can use the DTM and then the network will automatically throttles the data connection on 2g when getting a phonecall. (something about using node 1 instead of node 2 etc etc or circuit / packet switching or using voice over packet switching instead of circuit switching and what not and i am told most GSM systems in the uk use the node 2 system which is what causes this sort of !!!!!!.
so unless your network gets its backside into the present world of smartphones being actually used on the network (and not just selling smartphones on contract) and implements the DTM system nothing is going to change for ordinary consumers like you and me! so everyone if you are interested in actually USING a smartphone and also expect to be able to use the mobile phone as a mobile then pressurise your network to implement the DTM on the network which will allow you phone to get calls even if the phone is not in a good 3g /hsdpa signal area and using 2g/gprs instead even while doing background data access for the apps / widgets etc
if you are stuck with a network that hasnt implemented the DTM and cant wiggle out of the contract because it is the network that is at fault for not implementing DTM but still selling smartphones, then as a stop gap measure you can do the following (in my view as a layperson)- consider stopping pushemail or if there is a facility to decrease the mail update rate then try that (i dont know as i dont yet use push email). pushemail will be constantly accessing the net so if you get a call when the phone is accessing the net to update the pushemail etc then call doesnt come through to your phone if you are in a weak 3g/hsdpa area
- drastically decrease the frequency of apps accessing the net for refreshing data (eg facebook, twitter etc or stockmarket tickers etc) but this negates the use of a smartphone but hey you do want to receive calls dont you!!!
- use wifi for accessing data as a default option for data rather than 2g/gprs etc especially if you have wifi around at home or work or anywhere else
- use any apps that can configure your phone for the above mentioned setting. i think apps like 'layar' might be configured to work like that. i dont know but just guessing from what i have read about this. will know for sure after i get delivery of my 2 desires by three which is taking ages
- pray that your network implements DTM
- i am not sure if vodafone has actually implemented DTM all over but heard they were experimenting on this. so dont hold me to vodafone actually having implemented DTM!
- switch off instant messengers etc or set it to switch off using apps like Layar when not in a 3g/hsdpa area.
- if using apps like layar then configure it if possible to use GPS rather than phone network for location based services etc
- all the above defeats the purpose of buying a smart phone like the desire, but unfortunately until the networks that sell smartphones become smart themselves and get their act together nothing will happen except them taking your money and you not getting the full service expected and paid for.

Heh, thats a big post on itAlthough no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -

yes the networks dont realise that by implementing DTM they are on a win win situation because- they get happy customers but networks wont give a !!!!!! about that unless they make more money
- they get 3g like services over 2g
- cheaper to get fuller cover by upgrading 2g networks and get 3g like cover all over
- people use more smart phones , more data usage, more money for network!
- less complaints about phones not working and 3g 2g problem etc
-
A DTM end to end solution requires only a software upgrade to theGSM/EDGE radio base station system (BSS).
