The main issue I have with this is that eBay are expecting me to change my personal details to match their systems. I couldn't change my email address last year because of the same reason, but when I wrote to them they changed it for me. However, this time, they are refusing to change it. I think I will take my business elsewhere and ask them to remove all of my personal details since I very rarely use it.

I suspect that may be the best solution for both you and ebay. If you are not really using the ebay account then the hassle of keep changing your email address hardly seems worth the bother.

Is changing your email address an annual occurrence?
No wonder ebay want to avoid their manual intervention.

    Sounds like a solution. ;)

No it happened last year when I changed ISPs, and it happened again now when I obtained an email address that is ISP independent. It's crazy that I can't change my email address to... well, what my email address is. If eBay want to lose a customer over their moronic policy, then on their head be it.

It's not the policy that's moronic.

Erm....... their website, their way? If you want to use it then they can ask whatever the hell they want.Your entire rant is completely moot and as said, it is clear that they are not the morons.

That's not true. Their website policy doesn't overule the law, which requires that a data controller changes personal information they hold at the request of that person. My email address is personal information they hold about me, and I formally requested that they change it. That they have a policy that says your username and email address can't be the same is irrelevent, and frankly, isn't my problem. Since they have failed to cooperate with my requests, I have no option but to close my account. You wouldn't be very happy if you wanted to change your surname to Smith, and eBay refused to let you change it because they had a policy that said common surnames are not permitted. eBay are obliged to change inaccurate information at your request.

    Correcting information

This allows you to apply to a court to order a data controller to correct, block, remove or destroy personal details if they are inaccurate or contain expressions of opinion based on inaccurate information.

You can just add an email as Soolin said. Your now just making a mountain out of a molehill. You now just look very silly. Who's going to lose out from you closing your account not ebay I can tell you. To use another cliche cutiing your nose off to spite your face. Silly man

Hehe, love to know how you think I've lost out, when it's eBay who will no longer be making any money from me :rotfl:Interesting logic there my friend! I can easily take my business elsewhere. They can't raid my pockets for money :D

If they indeed had that policy then it would be tough on me changing my name to smith!

I don't see it as overruling law, their policy merely adds extra measures that happen to be stricter then the law. IF they want to do that they can, if there is a confliction, then they and you have two options, close the account or stay as you are. Are either of those options breaking the law? No, of course not.

Whilst annoying it may be, your rant and rave make it seem like ebay must bend over backwards and incur expenses to serve your pathetic and unnecessary request when you admittedly, barely use their service!

To fund your requests it would probably cost more in time, effort etc than they make off you. Even if not, why would they care to lose one person when thousands more flock there daily.

I love cyberbobs cliche! I think it perfectly sums you up.
