Can't get a credit card, any advice?

A couple of months ago I applied for a credit card with quite a low interest rate and I was refused. I've never been refused before but didn't think too much of it and applied for another one which was also refused. I got my credit report and there didn't seem to be any problems. I was rated "good". I waited until this month and applied for a card with a higher rate of interest which I was supposed to have a very good chance of getting. I've been refused again. I need a credit card to take with me to America next month. Now I have 3 searches on my credit report I'm worried i can't get anything. Can anyone suggest a card I might still be considered for? Or any advice would be great! I haven't had a credit card for a couple of years. I am disabled and unable to work but have a regular income.

I suspect that would be the reason for the decline. You need to be in employment. Very few, if not all CC lenders, accept customers who are unemployed.
  • What about a prepaid credit card for your trip? Otherwise I believe Vanquis offer a card that starts with a lower limit which gradually increases within a few months. Do you order from a catalogue? Often regular payments show up positively on your credit report which might help raise your 'credit score' so you get a credit card.

Thanks for the help. To answer all... I have had a credit card while not working before. I've had a barclaycard. Yes I've used and do use a catalogue and all my payments have been on time. As far as I know and can see on my file there were no defaults recorded and I shouldn't have any. I'll take a look at the PO card. Appreciate the advice.
  • make sure your on the voters roll.... no CC will accept you. or very few will.

I find that hard to believe.
My MIL is 82 and has not worked for 8 years.
She has several credit cards from well known names.
Surely they go off your "income" whether that's private pension, employment or whatever. In fact a pension is safer than wages as it's not affected by redundancy etc.

I believe the significant factor is income above a perscribed amount. I know that with amex some cards are at 20k, some at 30k but they are a high end card so the likes of Vanquis, Crapital 1 et al prob have lower requirements.

maybe you've been advised this but https://www.annualcreditreport.com provide you with a free credit report, you only have to around £3 to cover administration but they maych you to deals you are likely to get. So does https://www.checkmyfile.com...

Some lenders look for people who have LESS then perfect credit history. For example, i have a credit score of 900, which is perfect, but i've been rejected for an argos card. It doesn't make sense, i know but sometimes it works that way...

You might have an experian score of 900 mate, which does not mean a thing mate,as banks and other lenders score completely different,if you got turned down for the argos card it means to them you did not qualify and failed there credit score..
If you read past threads about experians credit score you would know what a waste of money that is,you can have a score on experian 999 which to them is excellent, you then apply for say a virgin card and they might score you with 500 which is average..
