Has anyone tried anything to get over the fear of driving? Looks like my hubby is going to have to surrender his liscence so if i don`t drive the car we`ll have to get rid of it.
I`d like one last bash at driving again.
Can anybody help?

  • Er, i presume you have a full license? Might be worth booking a lesson with a mature driving instructor and discussing your fears of driving with them and see if they can maybe teach you to become a more defensive driver.

Good Luck with facing your fears it will be worth it.

I cant think of any other way other than getting behind the wheel to overcome your fear. as sugested use a driving instructor to help you in this I expect it is some time since you drove last and a refresh lesson or 5 would be a good way to get back behind the wheel.

I wouldnt recomend driving with a friend of family member untilll your confidence builds up, they will apear terrified and may make comments you dont like and this could destroy your confidence again.

    Hello nuttywoman

The Institute of Advanced Motorists might be worth considering. They can help you with 'defensive driving' techniques.;)

I'll move your thread over to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

    Kind Regards

My husband is a car salesman, and he says he always finds that women push the seat too close to the wheel, ending up partly bent over the wheel and locking their arms, so they feel out of control. Whenever he takes a woman out for a test-drive and notices that problem, he makes them move the seat forward until they can reach the pedals comfortably, and then adjusts the seat back until their arms are at a relaxed angle (usually so that the body is about 60 degrees to the legs) - apparently most men do this naturally, but women and shorter men don't. Doing this certainly helped my driving and made me feel more in control of the car.
