Dog has big lump on neck

We noticed today that our Springer Spaniel has a big lump in his neck. It is about the size of a large egg. It just suddenly seems to have appeared. He was at the dog groomers last week and she is very good and I'm sure she would have mentioned it to my husband if she had found anything.
I spoke to the vet and we have an appointment on Thursday morning. Has this happened to anyone else?.

If the lump has come up very quickly there's a good chance it'll be an abscess. Has he been scratched/bitten etc recently? Scrabbling through bushes? Scratched by a cat? Does it feel warm?
I must say, if you have to wait 2 days to get in to see your vet I'd be registering with a new one.0 -
Thanks starrystarry, I hope it is an abscess. I will ring the vets again tomorrow and say he needs to be seen asap. He is eating, drinking and rushed around on his walk this morning. He is 11. He is such an intuitive dog that he seems to know we are really worried about him.

Being a spaniel it may be he has a grass seed that has gone through the pad and migrated - so he really needs to be seen sooner rather then later.
I had a spaniel that this happened to and the vet said it was very common, so needs to be looked at to rule it out. Hope he is okFree/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
On an alsation that passed away some years ago also developed a lump, which grew to the size of a small football. It was diagnosed as a fatty deposit, similiar to a lipomaris, the vet advised that he could drain away the fluid from the lump, but as it was not affecting the animal to leave it unless it grew further.
However any lump needs to be checked by a vet,0 -
glad to see you will be getting him checked out asap
there are a multitude of reasons why a lump may appear, and the only way to find out for sure is a trip to the vets.
I hope it turns out to be something and nothingI don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

My cocker spaniel had a huge lump appear on the top of his paw last week. It looked pretty sore and he kept licking it so we took him to the vet. Apparently grass seeds are a common cause of this, though it's a bit early in the year for these. Anyway, the vet thought it might be a thorn, though he couldn't see anything, and gave him antibiotics and anti-inflamatories - we have to go back later in the week for a check up and if it hasn't got better he'll have to be sedated so that the vet can open up the swelling and flush it out. As Kimitatu says, spaniels are pretty prone to this kind of thing as they are always running around fields, hedges and woods at 100mph.3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000

Thank you Kimitatsu, the tankgirl 1 and Rosie 75,
We took Blick to the vet at 8.30 this morning and they are giving him a general anaesthetic this morning so they can look and see if they can find anything. The vet thinks it's an abscess and he has had antibiotics. Thank you all for your concern.

Blick is being picked up from vet and is fine. It was an abscess caused by something infecting his mouth and has been drained. He has to go back tomorrow.
Once again thank you for your replies.
