Info/Advice on transfer flights by diff operators

Hi, I've only ever flown twice before on a visit to Italy last year and that was very straight forward.
This year I've booked to go from manchester to the US and back via virgin atlantic.
I have all the information on the flights to the US on the virgin website etc, however, my transfers between manchester and london are operated by BMI.
Virgin advise I need to speak to BMI about all questions and BMI advise they can only give me info on one flight as the other has a virgin flight number despite being operated by them?
Also, neither can seem to agree whether my bags will or will not be transferred for me in london or if I'll need to do this myself?
Can anyone advise me based on experience etc?
Thank you, Laura

If both flights are booked on the same ticket with Virgin Atlantic then your bags should be checked through to final destination at Manchester and you should be issued with boarding passes for both legs at Manchester.0
