This thread is crazy! I went away for the weekend and came back to 24 pages! My lunch break just won't be enough to catch up, i think i'll have to skim and hope not to miss anything important!
Hope today goes as amazingly as we all know it will! Looking forward to hearing all about it!0 -
PhD problems - well these are some I had (and I know some other people have had)
Procrastination - terrible for doing this, not only in the PhD area of my life either! :rotfl:
Losing focus - it's easy in research to go off on a tangent and follow along some minor side route and lose track of the bigger picture of the overall problem you are trying to address.
Not prioritising properly - in my case (I think this often happens to anyone working with any living things especially - plants, animals, cell cultures - because they have to be attended to regularly) so practical work takes precedence and leaves less time for reading / writing.
Keeping up to date with the literature - this was (during PhD and afterwards) the biggest problem for me, there is so much out there and more is published all the time. I found it really hard to do enough reading to keep up with new developments and also to remember what I'd read (I could find myself reading the same stuff 3 times before noticing) and keep it in my head so as to see the overview and spot possible connections between different areas. In fact I found this practically impossible - and I think it is one of the key things that makes a successful researcher. And just the simple fact of knowing how to read a paper to get the nest out of it!
Giving presentations - often a key part of a PhD as well - and something that terrified me so much I managed to avoid it for 12 years!!
Losing interest.
Underestimating the time needed to write, re-write, format figures, track down references, check details of materials etc (I didn't have this problem so much but many others have, especially if funding runs out and then they have to work at a 'proper job' and write in 'spare' time which is really very hard.)
MG hope this helps
Claire well done for being firm, trust me it is worth it, don't back down!

Good afternoon members of the Matrix
I am after your ideas please.....
As some of you will already know, I am a stockbroker, but I am also a hypnotherapist amongst other things, and did have a while of ditching my desk and doing this full time before going back to the challenge of the city.
I do still have a hand in, though, and one of the things that bumbles along in the background is a website where we have recorded downloadable MP3 format guided visualisations and guided meditations.
I do this in conjunction with a couple of business partners, one who owns the recording studio, and one who does the techy side of things, so none of us have to put up any cash at any time, but we do all give a lot in terms of time and input between us. However, they can't do any of it if I don't produce the goods.....
We have decided to have another *push* and get a whole lot more content on the site. That means that I have to do the first part of the work, which is to write the scripts ready to record them.
What I would like you lovely people to do, if you would like, and if you have time, is to click on my homepage, look at the current titles, and let me know what subject areas you think I should focus on for the next batch of writing that I need to do.
For example, if you think that general relaxation is the way to go, then that is what I will focus on, but if you feel that more needs to be done on childrens stuff/goal setting/confidence building or completely new subjects then please let me know! There are a couple of things already recorded which are in the pipeline, but generally speaking most things we have done are already on the site, so all new ideas welcome for me to work on!
Thanking you in anticipation!
And good luck to MG, although perhaps it should be good luck to Mr Big.........:DSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
What about targetting specific problems, e.g. the classics of weight (losing or gaining), smoking, alcohol, gambling etc.. Not sure if they're the sorts of fields you want to target though.
Also fears and phobias.
Adults panic about exams and tests too. e.g. Driving test nerves etc..
Not too sure how this imaging is supposed to work, so sorry if they're silly.0 -
@hypno could you do something for adults who are learning/studying and procrastinating a lot. See the above posts from the phd people. The goal setting/motivation pack is on my wanted list.Total debt 11/1/2011 €5350.65Total debt 12/12/12 €3222.31CrazyClothesChallenge 2013 #006 €34.08/€5000

Driving test nerves is one of the ones I recorded recently which is "in progress" - visualising a successful test etc. I thought about doing one for drivers who have passed their test, but who simply may not be confident in their driving. Eg, those who have never driven at night, or who had an accident some time ago and have been nervous of driving ever since.
I should do the adult studying and exams one, too - there are a lot of mature students around who haven't done any sort of exam since they left school, so that is an excellent idea, thanks!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. That's a great idea, I bought a "learning to drive" nerves cd from ebay over 2 yrs ago when I was learning and it was very helpful at the time. Thankfully I don't need it anymore, I got over the nerves eventually.
How about instead of general relaxation you target the relaxation at particular groups, new mums having sleepless nights, students doing exams, teachers maybe, they get stressed a lot.Total debt 11/1/2011 €5350.65Total debt 12/12/12 €3222.31CrazyClothesChallenge 2013 #006 €34.08/€5000 -
Lots of people are scared of the doctors & dentist too, so techniques for relaxing in the waiting room etc might work.
I've had friends who drive OK normally, but they won't go on motorways or drive in very busy city centres because they're too nervous. Some people won't drive to new places either. So you could add them to the driving lists.0 -
Excellent ideas - thank you!
Right, must get on with some "real" work.....:rotfl:Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0
