Baking potatoes?

Hi all

I have just bought a bag of baking potatoes which were going cheap. I need 3 of them for baking but what can I do with the rest? Am I right in thinking I can use them for potato wedges? If so, the next question is when is the best time freeze wedges - after cooking or before?

Thanks

SB

You can do anything with baking potatoes that you can do with any other type of potato except new potatoes. While some varieties of potato do 'bake' better than others, they are usually just big potatoes, nothing special, so they will boil, mash, wedge, fry, bake, make potato bread, and just about anything else.

Brilliant - thank you! They were a good buy in that case then as it saves me having to buy a bag of "ordinary" white potatoes this week :D

I use baking potatoes in a very easy recipe if you'd like it?

I chop the baking potatoes into wedges, toss in a little vegetable oil & bake in the oven until cooked. Then I spoon over a tub of fresh salsa (from the chiller cabinet - not the stuff in long life jars) & grated cheese. pop them back in the oven until cheese melts. Its really easy & is lovely! I've also mixed through a tin of kidney beans with the salsa to give a bit more protein too.

Asda sent baking potatoes instead of new pots - we dont like baked potatoes. How else can you cook them? Will they roast ?

    Yes, they will roast/boil/mash etc.

They are just bigger potatos, and will do what any other potato will do. I would recommend making oven chips with them...

    Hi mardatha,

As trow says you can use baking potatoes in the same way as you would use any other potato. The only difference between them is that they are larger and usually you pay a premium for them.

There was a recent thread on this subject:

    Baking potatoes?

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

Tesco sell packs of three baking spuds for a few pence & I buy them instead of a big bag, reason is it'd take me a month to use a normal bag & I like the bigger spuds for chips ect plus one spud=one portion mash, for me anyway.
It's a marketing ploy when in reality they're all the same.
Ask yourself this, when your mom went shopping to the local greengrocers, she got the spuds from a big hessian sack.Do you remember mom selecting spuds on what they were for or for the size?I remember the latter.
The only time you used to see different spuds was because of the seasons.
