?? baking potatoes cost a heck of a lot more than ordinary potatoes. I have no idea why? but baking potatoes are just potatoes which will mash, chip and roast too! in other words they are 'old' potatoes! new potatoes are much nicer scraped and just boiled (but you can roast them too and they are lovely). the supermarkets have cottoned on to the fact that most modern people have no idea about potato varieties and their uses and have 'helpfully' labelled certain varieties as 'salad' or 'baking' ignoring the fact that they have other uses - and hiking the prices of them! have a look at the 'value' potatoes and look up the names of them - maris pipers are excellent for chips, mash and roasting. Estima are in my opinion totally useless.... supposed to be a good all purpose potato but IMHO are useless at all. King Edward are great for mashing and chipping and roasting. Charlotte are a good boiling potato and Deseree are brill for mash and roasting but taste a bit sweet for chips. Maris Peers - well, all the ones I have had have gone so watery I dont buy them for mash or boiled even though the blurb says they are good for both!
OH - and I do NOT buy any Maris Pipers from Tesco or Asda - not sure where they source them from but havent had good results from them and they dont even LOOK like the ones I get from local greengrocers!
