What phone settings need changing when switching network?
I have finally managed to get the unlock code from Orange for my Sony Ericsson (w580i) and am just waiting for the PAC code before dumping Orange and going to Tesco PAYG (or possibly Asda Mobile).
What settings do I need to change on the phone so that I can still text (SMS and MMS) and use the internet?
I know that if I go to the Sony Ericsson site I can input my phone model and the network I am transferring to and they will send a free text to my phone with the settings - does this automatically update the settings (like a SIM update) or will I have to manually change them? If it works automatically will any new settings overwrite what is already in my phone or will it create new profiles for the internet settings etc?
Thanks for any help and advice.

You'll need to enter new APN details for your new network - one for internet and one for MMS (probably). You can enter these manually if you can find them on the internet/extract them from customer services, but the simplest way is to find out if you can have a text with the details sent to your phone, so they can be entered automatically. As you mention you can do this on the Sony Ericsson site, that's the first thing to try. This will probably overwrite the details for the old network on your phone.
You shouldn't need to enter any extra details to be able to use SMS.0 -

Maybe nothing.
When I've swapped sims before a lot of these settings happen automatically as they are stores either in the phone or the sim, once it realsied the different sim is in place it jsut works it out.0 -
Thanks for the advice - I was wondering because I don't want to get the text from Sony Ericsson and find that I can't use Orange any more.0

The way it's always worked for me is they send a text with the details and your phone asks if you you want to use the details contained in the text. You don't have to use them straight away if you're not ready to change.
However, my experience has been using Nokias on O2... and the supplied details in the text never actually worked, so I had to enter them manually.
There is a chance the APN details could come on the SIM - it's a logical idea, but I've never had a SIM with those details included.0
