Quote for decking

Not strictly a "is this quote fair" thread since I've not had a quote but I'm looking for some pointers on how much it would cost for decking installation.
Area is pretty level with only around a hundred millimetres or so level difference across the area.
It's not next to the house and will be built on what is currently a patio although I can easily lift that leaving grass/sand bedding.
Rough size - probably somewhere around 4m x 5m.
Would like handrail round 3 sides.
Because the ground is almost level stairs are unlikely to be required but it would be nice if it was raised something like 300mm from ground level in which case a stair or two would be needed.
There will be no planning issues since the garden is something like 15mx30 so the decking will be small in comparison.
I'm in Glasgow area.
What would be a typical price for someone/a company to come in and erect something of that size?
Thanks in advance

Sorry can't give you a quote but could you do it yourself? I normally don't advise people to "DIY" on MSE because many people can't for various reasons! However, I noticed from your profile that you are a civil engineer.
I'm constructing my own which is slightly smaller than yours (4.8m x 3m). My 11 4.8m joists (6x2) cost £120. I got decking from B&Q for £1.98 for 2.4m lengths. You'd need 82 and you can get them from B&Q now for about £2.50 so £200. posts and hand rails would probably set you back another £150. Add the steps and some posts to raise it then I'd reckon about £550.
You could have a look at kits from somewhere like edecks.co.uk0 -

many thanks for your reply.
I am indeed in construction and probably could do the work myself. It may not be very MSE but sometimes I think it's better to pay a pro to do something even if I could do it myself. They'll often do it quicker and make a better job. Besides - I'd be doing it for a few hours after work when I'd rather be sitting relaxing after work.
It is something to consider though - might lengthen the construction period by a couple of weeks though!!
As for prices - I visited a local company who quoted £820 for the supply of all the required wood including handrails. That works out at very similar or slightly cheaper to edecks.
They also supplied me with a couple of phone numbers of local joiners who erect the decking although I don't have a price for that - just a phone number.
So I'm reckoning it'll be around 2days work and if I assumed something like £300 per day I'm probably looking at close to £1500 for the whole thing supplied and fitted.
Ebay has numerous decks but I don't know what the quality would be like - the prices are significantly cheaper than my local company and I could either phone the joiners or have a go myself - fairly big, if uncimplicated job.

I have just priced a 3m x 4m deck, no handrails etc, and cost was £600 supplied and fitted. Thats £360 in materials and £240 in labour.

We got a local joiner to supply and put up our decking (we had to have a building warrant as it was raised about 18'' and we were putting in a French door as well). The area was about the same size as yours. Handrails on 2 sides, and inset steps. Cost us £1500 last year.
We priced wood ourselves but we were just as well getting it though the joiner. Plus we didn't have the hassle of getting it delivered ourselves and carting it round the back of the house!0 -
Hi We are in Glasgow area . We have had 2 similar jobs done and from Memory one 2 years ago was nearly 2K (just slighty bigger) but the second one was nearer £1500 as the second chap just ordered the wood and we paid directly to the timber merchants (on the southside near/opposite the Tramway).
Both decks were well done and we are happy with them. The first done 2 years ago the guy didn't finish off very quickly , kept coming back and just doing bits so we changed to a local southside guy last summer who did that job and some fencing for us and he was very accurate , neat and got the job done quickly.
If you want either no I can dig them out.0 -
I have recently had two quotes for 22 sq metres of decking. Ground slopes about 18" in total and I want some 1.5 metre steps in as well. First price was £2,700.00 and second was £1,400.00. I would do it myself but would most likely make a total mess of it.0

regardless of mats you have 3 days work there for a chippie and labourer.
750 in labour.
Supply the mats yourself if your worried about someone making a few bob. Most tradespeople get trades discounts and will mark the prices upto B@Q levels.
Wont be that much difference in materials price although chippie will know how much to order & where stocks the best stuff. Probably would also be reluctant to make you out a list of bits to order if your buying as this is how you justify making money on the markup.0 -
ok...thanks to all for the tips and prices.
I've had a change of heart though.
After seeing a neighbour's attempt at decking, it has inspired me to build it myself.
I'll be able to do it in stages and spread the cost aswell since I won't have to buy everything at one time.
I've even done some calcs to find out how much the decking will bend, check my post centres and confirm the size of joist I have in mind is sufficuent!
Enough boring stuff.............
Next question - I'll build it using treated timber. i've read in a few places that treated timber does not require any sort of additional protection. Then I've read in other places that it DOES require treatment to protect it.
What are the opinions of those with decking and if protection is necessary, what is the best product?
Many thanks again!!

Hi
I use a Ronseal decking stain on mine. It comes in various shades and is easy to apply. I dont think that you actually have to further protect but i have because pressumably it will last longer and i didnt like the colour of the bare treated wood.
I would strongly advise against using decking paint. All the ones i have seen look great to start with but flake later and look terrible. Its also a nightmare to strip off.
My decking is about 20 square meters and cost me approx £15 in stain. I do it every year and it still looks good.

I am hoping that once my decking is done, as it will be all pressure treated timber, I wont have to put any further protection on it.
To properly coat a deck, you would have to literally have to take it all apart.
Most decks can get pretty slippery after a while due to algae build up. I have one of those pressure washers with the enclosed head designed to clean patios and decking, so hopefully all my deck will require is a quick going over with the washer every now and again.0
