Cancelling Orange Contract
Hello all,
Lurked around here for awhile but never felt the need to make a post, until now.
Basically my girlfriend signed up to a 24 month contract with the Car phone warehouse about a month ago. When she got the phone she didn't use it for the better part of a week until they had got around to giving her, her old number back. (She used a different pay as you go phone for that week).
Perhaps naively she spoke with someone from the carphone warehouse who eventually persuaded her that for the model of phone she wanted that an Orange contract was the best for her. She trusted this persons advice (again perhaps naively, but in her mind why couldn't she trust a so called experts advice).
So one week into the contract and she hasn't used the phone. She starts using it and where she lives (Storrington) she has very, very poor signal. At first it was managable but now a month into the contract the signal has gone from poor to basically non exsistent. And coincidentally it turns out that there are better deals available. Unlikely but maybe this could be a factor for breaking a contract as she was mislead? (doubt that, as it was carphoneware house that did the misleading).
I've heard that Orange are notoriously difficult to deal with when you're tied into a contract with them but i was hoping that one of you good people would be able to offer some advice.
I know that Orange have a 2 week return policy but surely as the product they've sold isn't really working (ie - from having a bit of signal to pretty much no signal) that this will be some loophole.
Any advice or information at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
James

Did they check the signal before she took out the contract?0

Hmmm if they didnt you could try and say it was missold, Dont know if it would get you anywhere0
-
Little mistake apparently the contract is with the carphone warehouse.
Also she mentioned that she wasn't informed of any signal check.0 -
She doesn't have to be. Caveat Emptor; you'll get no-where with cpw unless you find a rare gem in an outfit of flawed stones.0
-
But surely she's been mislead? or ilinformed.
Would this not be a potential get out of Carphone Warehouse free card?
Does anyone know the ways to cancel a contract with CPW after a the given 14 day period?0 -

Her word agaist theirs.
If the contract is with Orange then you need to deal with Orange, CPW do there own o2 contracts but Orange usually do everything themselves once the phone is sold.
Signal check wise, it's usually the otherway if you don;t tell them they won't check. (but they are no different to other mobile co's in that respect). Have you called Orange to ask if there are any issues in the area? Radio waves can't cover all the country, (vallets and hills to consider) but if a mast is faulty that could ( and this is a very slight possibility) and not repaired that could be grounds to cancel. However that really is a small chance.
Better deals come out all the time theres nothing you can really do about that, if it was bought on-line or over the phone then after a week into a contract theres not a lot you can do. If it was bought in store then as soon as you sign you are committed.
Sorry it's not better news but once signed up (did she actually ask how the signal was in store or just signed up for a new phone) that usually it your tied in to the minimum term.
Only real way to cancel is to pay off the contract, £xx PCM x 23 (I assume there are 23 months remaining) to clear the contract.0 -
You may be on to a bit of a loser here with CPW, as if you live in Storrington in West Sussex, the reception checker that I used shows the reception for Orange to be good
See http://search.orange.co.uk/ouk/portal/coveragechecker.html?channel=direct/
You can try with your girlfriend's post code for more accuracy and, if Orange claim to be Good, then, using other Orange mobile phone and sim, if the reception around (not in) her house is poor, then you should tackle Orange with your findings.
But I suspect that, since she didn't do a specific check first and the checker saying good reception, CPW are off the hook.0 -
I've just successfully cancelled a contract direct with Orange.
I bought a phone in an Orange shop (by the way there is no 14 day return policy for buying direct, only through the internet - not sure about over the phone?). From day one there was no signal in my area. They registered my compaint but told me the 3G masts were down for 3 weeks for servicing. After they came back up I still couldn't get a signal so was allowed to cancel. However this was only because I had made the original complaint so quickly.
If your girlfriend signed up a month ago, it may already be too late.
The coverage checker showed Excellent coverage for my area.0
