help! Best switch from BT?

Hi,

My mother in law has given me the task of finding her the best deal from BT broadband. There won't be a lot of downloading, but we do want it to be reasonably fast.

I was going to suggest the Talk Talk, but then having read the threads, it seems that it would be a nightmare to get it sorted.

All suggestions welcomed! I want to get this right!!

thanks

Mark

Whats wrong with B.T that she wants to change?
  • Hi Merrimark

Well if she wants to stick to BT Total Broadband then Option 1 on an 18 month contract is the cheapest. £9.95 for the first 6 months and then £17.99 for 12 months, (average mthly cost - £15.31).

What do you get with this?

You get a service with speeds up to 8Mbps (usually means 2-5Mbps) and a 2Gb monthly download cap which should be ample unless she downloads a lot or uses internet telephony (VOIP).

The real advantage is you get free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines, (you don't need to use VOIP for this offer) and free 250 mins of wireless VOIP calls a month using the BT Openreach network (I'm guessing she probably won't use this).

All in all if you already have a broadband router and VOIP handset then it's a good deal. If you don't have the hardware or you're an existing BT customer who wants to upgrade it's a pretty costly package to get set up.

If you want the BT Home Hub and the BT Handset for free Option 3 for 18 months gives you everything for an average monthly cost £24.99 a month and the capability to use other new services coming on stream provided by BT such as Internet TV services and free video phone calls, (one again though hardware costs bite deep, I think a video phone cost £125 and you need at least two for it to work if that makes sense? I think you also pay £8 a month subscription for this).

    Hope this sort of helps?
