This will mean that the NI/private plate will be voided and never re-issued again. DVLA do not buy them back.

Where does that come from FB ?, not arguing the point but I'd like it proven. I cannot believe a government body would give up on a change to screw us for a few more penniesI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Can I do it quicker in person?
All you'll do is cut out postage time of application getting there. It's not an over the counter service so will still take a few days to process.

I'm ex-DVLA and this is what we were trained. I also find it odd that they are not re-sold, I think it's an old rule that was introduced when private plates were first introduced as DVLA never expected them to be as popular. It is also a form of 'punishment' (for want of a better word), as the plates are the property of the Secretary of State for transport not the person whose vehicle they appear on. So the plate can be confiscated at any time if an offence is commited (e.g. repeatidly being stopped for have misplaced number plate), and then that way the person cannot ever get place back IYKWIM.
