making calls and texts from USA to UK mobiles

hi. i hope someone can help me please:beer:

i have read and read posts and still not making sense of what i am reading, even on other websites. im feeling a little bamboozled.

i am going to Florida on the 30th May for 10 days. during this period i need to be in contact with a mate who i can only contact on a mobile number. it will be texts and the odd call. texting several times a day. it will be just one number.

i am aware i have 2 options.
1 is to use my orange mobile and change the bandwidth. and get him a different orange sim (camel tariff) to use to call me and text me on.
2 is to buy a cheap USA phone from ebay prior to going and giving him that number and still get the camel tarrif sim on orange to keep his costs down.

skype isnt an option.

Please can someone advise me on what the best option is and which is the cheapest option for my needs.

If there are US PAYG then I would suggest getting one of those , whichever way you do it, you will have to cost it over 10days, oh and remember you pay for incoming calls as if you were calling the US from the UK, it won't affect your friends calls or texts.

i think verizon network in the usa has launched skype just like three network on their phones. so if you get a pay as you go sim card in the usa then can use skype on your mobile and your friend can use skype on their mobile here.

thats if you find it easy to get a pay as you go sim in the usa. i dont know if they will give you one without usa address proof, credit history etc.

You can get USA payg sim pretty much without any kind of proof. It has been posted in the sticky above. Just walk into walmart, target, etc. and buy a payg sim. Put it in your phone, follow directions to activate, and you are on your way. You can also get an already activated tmobile/AT&T sim on ebay, no need to activate it. Just drop it in your phone. If you have a phone with Wifi or laptop, there is free WiFi everywhere in the US, so that can come in handy for skype/voip.

thanks. i could do with getting the phone and sim before i go as my mate will need my number in advance. will he have to pay when i ring him?
