I've found a few old Mercs and BMWs in my search for a banger but the only thing that worries me is running repairs to keep it going between MOTs could be a lot more than other marques.

Have you priced up the parts? You will find that the parts for an old W123 will be relatively cheap (cheaper than say an old Granada).

Just do some research at Euro Parts or German and Swedish.

This is a 126, but I imagine the same applies.

You are all an amazing mine of information.

I am locumming at the mo, and saw the parking today - tiny! But can get the tube!

I had been swaying towards the Skoda (parking and insurance), but if not the VW base then maybe not so good?

Also had top MSE idea! I have got 3rdptf insurance from a classic car specialist for £200 cheaper then "compare the market" and all those types. So 3pft is £270, and comp is £340.

Correct me, but is there much point doing fully comp on this age of car?

So the pendulum swings, insurance now only £70 more than Skoda, Skoda not the secret VW we thought, I want to be the gangsta b*tch of North london!

Also, have been planning a wedding and those cars make a fortune - this is a huge white Merc - who wouldn't pay me £500 to drive them 5 miles to and from a church - nice little earner???

Just remember that classic insurance, as a rule, does not earn No Claims Discount....

  • Thanks catflea (or should I type ctenocephalides felis?)

I find the whole no claims thing crap - my insurance hasn't got any cheaper the longer I have got! I could also rack up no claims on the OH's work car?

Paradigm - I know I want to! Gangsta terrorist car the size of 4 Smart cars. . .

    Tomorrow

    1-test drice
    2-service history
    3-MOT

Or it may be the Skoda!

My new feeling when buying a car is go for what you want - I have tried to be sensible in the past and you still get burned!

  • Oh, and as for fuel, even with a Smart on auto in traffic with London prices. . . still could power a rocket with what I give Shell!

I am planning on 3000 miles per annum - I have managed 4000 in 2 years using the Smart for everything!

No it is quite a VWified Skoda, just not quite what I thought originally as I got confused. I think if you buy the merc you owe us a brief loan of it, including insurance. :p

I saw a Felicia today with a 1.9 diesel lump in it, am I right in thinking this is the popular VW 1.9 TDI that's been in Golfs and such for years now too?
