Try doing a masters with a mortgage, wife and two kids - thats why I take the view I do.....it has to be for long term job prospects otherwise theres no point in doing it imho.

That's a different situation and, in your case, I would ageee with you. However, I do think it's important not to see higher learning as being solely about getting a better job or otherwise it becomes totally utilitarian, which I don't think it should be.

i didn't take on the decision lightly, and the course was for long term job prospects. i was offered and accepted my ideal job while still on my course.

Whoops!!! Didnt mean that course in particular, and have no idea if an MA in Popular Music studies gets you a better job at the end of it (eg Controller Radio One).....was just an anti-intellectual masturbation course comment ie whats the point in someone trashing their own cash and time for no physical reward.

I disagree: there might be all sorts of different rewards. It is up to the individual to make their own decision.

What we agree on, I expect, is that no-one should vaguely assume that a Master's is the key to some kind of good or well-paid job, unless they have done their research properly and know exactly which courses are relevant to which jobs. I mean, the price of doing an MA is similar to that of a new car, and the pleasure of understanding a fascinating topic in-depth is probably at least as great as the pleasure of owning the car of your dreams. However, just as no-one should buy a flash car in the hope of getting a good job as a result, no-one should assume that doing any kind of MA will necessarily make them any more employable.

Voyager, you do make valid points. I mean, the way the jobs market is at the moment, there are graduates manning the tills at Asda or working as cleaners on minimum wage. I'll be doing it for the mental stretch mainly...
