Good idea.
I take the view that if the masters doesnt lead to a better job/better wages, dont waste one to three years of your life doing it, eg the job market for people with a masters in history of music is somewhat limited.illegitimi non carborundum0 -

Funny you should say that...I'm planning on doing my MA in Popular Music Studies...and not ruling out a phd either.:o0 -
Whoops!!! Didnt mean that course in particular, and have no idea if an MA in Popular Music studies gets you a better job at the end of it (eg Controller Radio One).....was just an anti-intellectual masturbation course comment ie whats the point in someone trashing their own cash and time for no physical reward.illegitimi non carborundum0

Nothing wrong with learning for its own sake.0 -
For a Masters, unless youve got nothing better to do, or are independently wealthy, sorry but I disagree. No harm in doing evening classes at local college in Ancient Greek Mythology if thats what floats your boat.illegitimi non carborundum0

Hi all. Our eldest daughter will soon be graduating from Edinburgh Uni after a 4 year degree course. She has now been accepted to do a Masters at LSE (London School of Economics) and we are all shuffed about it......except that her Masters is costing £10k and accommodation will be £560 per month......
Would anyone know what loans/grant/burseries are available for that kind of Masters course?
loans/grants/bursaries for masters courses are few and far between. unless it is being paid for through a job, or funded by businesses it's unlikely that there will be anything available.
like you daughter i went to edinburgh for 4 years, and then followed this up with a masters. one difference being that although i applied pretty soon after graduating, i applied for deferred entry so that i could work for a year to save up - is this an option? my course was 7k, and living costs brought the full up to around 15k by the end of my masters. of course i hadn't got this much saved and relied on parents for contribitions.
i did a year full time MSc which had classes from September-June Monday-Friday 9-5, and then from June-September to complete dissertation. Some courses, particularly MAs are not as intense, and she may be able to fit in a part time job.
career development loans may be an option, but i feel very lucky that i didn't have to go down this route because i know friends who have struggled with the repayments, which start when the course ends.0 -

My course is very, very challenging in some modules; google ethnography and semiotics for a tiny iota of an idea of what we're talking about here!!Oldernotwiser wrote: »Nothing wrong with learning for its own sake.
I agree, although am not taking Froggitt the wrong way...just I really want to better myself and get some focus, direction and discipline.0 -
Im sure it is very challenging, and nothing wrong with self betterment or focus or discipline. My personal view though is that it should lead somewhere other than self betterment, focus and discipline, ie job/work/money, rather than course and living debts.course was 7k, and living costs brought the full up to around 15killegitimi non carborundum0

Try doing a masters with a mortgage, wife and two kids - thats why I take the view I do.....it has to be for long term job prospects otherwise theres no point in doing it imho.
I understand you...My best friend has done just that; a masters with a spouse and 2 kids and debts to pay...and other people on the same course have left families behind in other countries to come and study...but for them it's worth it, as it will be for me too when my time comes around.0 -
I hope it will be worth it for you Flicker......whatever you want to get out of it. Good luck.illegitimi non carborundum0
