MIL has norton on her computer that expires in a week or so. I know there are other free versions etc but it is going to be much easier to stick with what she knows. Thig is to renew NORTON Internet Security 2010 via norton its going to cost £44.99. We could buy it from amazon/pcworld etc for £23??!!
Can anyone tell me if replacing it rather than renewing will cause any issues?
Thanks

Get kaspersky internet security 2010 from ebay (making sure its new and sealed 3 user license) from around £15 for a years subscription.
Its cheaper and less memory hogging than nortons - if you decide to keep norton, renewing it with the amazon copy ought to give you another 12 months.0 -
The fact that Symantec charge twice as much for a renewal as a new version tells you all you need to know. Dump it.
Another vote for Kaspersky (which, if one of you uses Barclays online banking, is available free). No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Or get Avira premium security, best of the lot.0

Have used Norton and McAfee and Avast and Avg and Avira. Now with Windows 7 I find Microsoft Essentials works best. Have had no infections and no false alarms. Updates in the background with Windows updates and doesn't bother me with pointless messages, try to sell me the pro version, bombard me with adverts, or demand registration annually. I don't know it is there, which is what I want. If anyone doesn't agree I don't care. I am happy with it.A fool may give advice but the one who takes it is the bigger fool.0

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ i've been using essentials as well for the last few months and it just gets on with it , i've also used avg , avira and avast and i would say that essentials is no worse than them, also it depends on what your mil is using her pc for , i don't suppose she's going to be downloading dodgy files etc0

Get AVG, it is free and very good. I work in IT support and installed on all my computers. Get Zonealarm for firewall. Also found them less hassle to use than Norton and Kaspersky.
For Spyware get Spybot.

Suggest you have a search of this forum, then think again, the consensus would probably be against that advice.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

AVG for antivirus and Zonealarm for firewall? If you don't mind me asking, since you brought it up, what kind of IT support do you do? I may have recommended the same myself maybe 4 years ago or so, but definitely not today."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

It's almost always cheaper to buy again rather than renew.
Also, if you are with Sky you can get McAffee, or if you are with Barclays you can get Kaspersky, for nothing.0 -
The previous posts all have there own views about which are the best products to use - some are valid and some are not. If you are happy with Norton then carry on using it at the discounted price - you can also get it at Amazon or Tesco for about £22 - £23.
Uninstall current version by downloading the Norton Removal Tool here:

Update with the new version you bought earlier.0
