Hi
Ive done a search but cant find anything to help me.

I have a Dell laptop running "Works". I need to send my CV to various companies and worried that if I merely change the format of a Works processor document to a .doc file that when they receive it it wont be formatted as it should be so thought I would be better downloading Word? Im not sure what is compatible etc and dont want to run anything before checking with someone that knows what they are talking about as Im not at all computer literate. Many thanks in advance.

MS Word is not a free program that can be downloaded, sorry.

However, Open Office is free software that is compatible with MS products and will enable you to save in .doc format.

You can download openoffice which is a free suite, and save the file as a Word 97-2007 format, or you can download a trial of Microsoft Office 2010 which runs until October. https://www.openoffice.org or https://www.microsoft.com

better to send it as a PDF

install this free software http://www.cutepdf.com/ which will create a new PDF Printer in your list of printers ... then you just print your document in Works to PDF

As an alternative, providing it's basically just formatted text, write it in Works and then 'Save As' Rich Text Format (RTF). Works and Word both understand this format, as do most other word processors.

Thanks everyone. I sent one off prior to accessing replies on here (as there was a deadline) and opened the works file then "saved as" and changed the file type to .doc

Will that still format properly when the person that gets it opens it?

I will do as has been suggested above for the other ones that Im sending.

Thanks everyone (now slightly worried that the person I mailed this morning wont get a formatted version????.....)

No need for this if she uses OpenOffice. It can export to PDF natively. I don't know CutePDF, but all these "PDF printers" usually create PDFs as "image". That means you can't copy and paste text for instance into another document. With OpenOffice it even keeps chapter informations and so on.

Just tried renaming one of my .rtf files to .doc and MS Word (Office 2000 version) opened it fine when I double-clicked on it. (I'm assuming that you selected the RTF format when you did your 'Save As' and didn't just change the file's extension!)

Actually Open Office does the whole job. It can save as PDF and would be my word processor of choice for this job.

Oh no!!! I just changed the file extension at the bottom where you can use the drop down to .doc instead. It was a .wps file previously. I asked my BF to check what Id sent him first as did this as a test before and he said it opened OK? Now Im in a right panic. I sent them a .wps file too - will they be able to convert it if they only have word? Really worried now.

    Panic over (I think!).

I've just tried saving a Works text file with text in a mixture of fonts and sizes in the way you describe. Used both of the formats offered by the drop-down ('Word 6.0/95' and 'Word 97-2002 6.0/95 - RTF') and both documents read OK into MS Word. Interestingly, there was a very slight difference in spacing and the style of individual letters, but nothing noticable unless you flip back-and-forth between them.

Good luck with the job hunt.
