Maplin Vent

I had to return a cable to Maplin today. I bought it after asking Maplin staff which one would do the job and it didn't - totally wrong connectors. I decided I'd have a refund as I'd decided not to continue with the project I'd bought it for.

Anyway it was rather like a session with the Gestapo than a shop! The manager couldn't understand why I had opened the packer and unwound the cable. What else would I do with it? They told me it was the right thing. He kept going over, and over this same point. When I defeated him he started asking why I didn't return it last week? I told him I wasn't answering any more questions and could he please get on with my refund. He did this with a scowl on his face.

Don't buy from here if you expect a fair returns service!

I took an 8 month old motherboard back to Maplin this week on which the onboard graphics card had just died. In and out in 5 minutes with an exchange, no problems at all....I had the receipt.

Out of interest, what cable did you need, and what did they sell you?

Buying the wrong item is your responsibility - even if they advise you.
You only have a right to a refund if the item is faulty or not fit for the purpose it was designed for.

Nope. It wasn't as described. I asked for a cable to do a job and it didn't.

    Still no.
I asked them for a product to do a job. It didn't do what they told me it would. The cable was clearly not fit for purpose
Sadly I cannot link, but there is an article on the Which? website that explains this.
Are you saying that Which? is wrong?

No, I'm willing to be corrected. But how could you establish that you were even given any advice?

I wish I could link but the quote from Which? is:
"'fit for purpose' – this means both their everyday purpose, and also any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller (for example, if you specifically asked for a printer that would be compatible with your computer)."

As it happened the man who (mis)advised me was in the store and did back me up. I guess if they wanted to fight the matter a court would have to decide whether I was lying over £6?
