Only a few weeks away from mid summer:( and then its all downhill. If I knew who to complain to about the weather I would be first in the queuLook after the pennys and the pounds will look after themselves:money:0
-
It's not been as cold as yesterday and no wind and the sun was out for a while:) so I have been out just tidying up the borders. I did pot up a few annuals. I do wish the weather would warm up though while we have lovely light nights.0
-
When I got home from work I rushed out and cut the front lawn and tickled the borders with a hoe. It was good to feel some warmth in the air again.0
-
I've had all the windows open. Not that I've managed to do anything but water the plants today0

A whole weekend ahead. What are your plans?
I am energized after watching a blackbird building a new home just 4 feet from my window. The 'foundations' (wedged into the 4" between my fence and neighbour's extention wall) went in on Thursday afternoon; by Friday when I got home from work the 'walls' were all up (situated on top of the fence) and the inside 'plastered'. Today the 'soft furnishings' are going in. Amazing!!
I'd better get out of bed then!0 -

Lovelife, you will have to thin out your seedling to give them some space. Are you growing them for whole lettuces or for salad leaves? If you want lettuces, imagine how big lettuce is and that's the amount of space they will need. If you want have a few cuts of salad leaves you need to give them 2-3cms.
I start most of my seeds off in modules so that they can be put out when they have a nice rootball to give them a good start and I am very meanwhen I sow seeds. With fresh lettuce seed I will only put one seed per module (honest) and I have few failures. I've kept lettuce seed for 5 or 6 years and it will still germinate. Some veg seeds need to be fresh though.
You will learn so much just by trial and error, just have fun with it.
Back to work tomorrow, let's hope the weather improves for us all soon.[/QUOTE]
Thank you for the advice, it's obvious when you think about, i just got carried away with all the little seeds lol. i've got all my salad seedlings in two troughs on the landing window sill, and every time i pass them i have a mini snack in an effort to thin them down, the other day i saw someone in the street staring up at me, they must have wondered what on earth i was doing:rotfl:
Repotted 40 tomato seedlings yesterday and they are all looking quite happy, and put all my herbs together in a terracotta pot, still no sign of my mushrooms, they seem to be taking ages. Hope the weekend is a bit warmer and everyone has some growing fun in the sun0 -
Hello
Northern newbie.... to gardening and the north. Originally from Kent so getting used to the weather systems up here. We're now living in C.Durham and enjoying it so far!
We're also considering ourselves "yardners" as well as we dont actually have a garden. We basically live in Coronation Street, with the back alleys, coal hatches and yards, but we love it.
We've opted to grow some veg in our yard, using the black flower buckets from Morrissons as basically everything we do needs to be cheap as chips, as Im not working due to being 35 weeks pregnant and DH's job isnt well paid.
Anyway we currently have round carrots, red onion, spring onion, brussel sprouts, purple sprouting broccoli, cauliflower and courgette plants. And I have a little chilli seed pot from Wilkinson which has produced 10 seedlings, which will get re-potted soon.
Also have some orchid bulbs in as well which came from Poundland, got 50 bulbs, not sure what we're gonna do with most of them.... as we've so far managed to plant 10!
And currently on the lookout for what we can use for height in the garden. We get sun on one side of the yard from early morning till about 3pm, and there is a 6ft wall between us and next door which is permanently in shade. Anyone have any recommendations for what loves shade, good in containers and not harmful to dogs (we have a pug who likes to investigate)?
Also planted some herb seeds to see if anything happens with those. Although I think I may have been better off just buying young plants. So far we've got basil and mint in an old poppadom container!
So hello to all and hope everyone enjoys their weekend xWealth is not measured by currency0 -

I love to watch the blackbirds, they aren't nesting in our garden but they come in to feed and eat all my worms, I could watch them all day.
No gardening here today, I have my scarf on indoors! it is freezing, a real north east wind blowing.
My friend is digging up a big hydrangea soon, she doesn't like it and I am getting it:j might be the wrong time to transplant but I think it will be ok to do it before the flowering time:eek: Also went to the salerooms today, they were selling plants trees and shrubs and pots and ornaments. I was too cold to stand and wait around though
Have a good day all0 -
