From what I have read above, I'd wait and see if the cheque clears before getting too excited

As he has given you more than you asked for, did he also ask you to forward on the difference to his mate from Nigeria?

Glad you are sorted and don't worry about what 'might' have happened.

I think you should find out why it was a cat C write off first, this usualy means it is behond economical repair and needs a complete mechanical retest before it can be reissued with a logbook, i.e. it would cost more to repair than it is worth, this can happen quite often even with a severe crease in body work after an accident due to the cost garages charge insurance companies for repair, these cars are then bought by dealers who often repair them at less than 10% of what the insurance company was quoted. I bought a BMW X5 suposedly cat C write off because the engine had been blown for £4,000, it cost me £6,000 for a top end guaranteed recon engine, £800 for a complete mechanical and stress test on car, total cost £11,800 inc fitting, value of car for resale now £23,000. So as you see sometimes a Cat C write off can be a bargain, even more so with a Cat D where it only needs repair and no retest.
My source of catagories of write offs is she who must be obeyed who is one of the senior vehicle licensing officers here.
Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.

Easy mistake to make, and I must admit, until a couple of years ago, I too though dealers/traders were more reputable than a private sale.

I bought a Focus from a garage in Leeds.. the car was actually fine, really nice car, only had it 4 months and had to sell it. A chap and his dad came round to view, went away and did a check on the car for £5, (I hadn't done that!) came back and said it had been a write off, altho only a minor one. I felt awful, I explained that I really didn't know. They still bought the car - less £150.

Always check it, never buy without a log book.

Glad you got £500 tho, bonus!
