How do you leave TalkTalk?

My friend is currently with TalkTalk for phone and broadband. He wants to switch to O2 broadband but TalkTalk said he couldn't as O2 wouldn't be able to have broadband on a TalkTalk line. So the obvious answer was to switch phone line to a different company as well but TalkTalk said it can only be switched back to BT and that my friend would have to wait for the line to go back to BT for him to order broadband from O2 or any other provider. Is this correct? I've read a few posts on various sites and it seems like it might be true - although I did have TalkTalk phone line (with phone rental) and Sky broadband but perhaps my line was not completely unbundled back then.
TalkTalk have tried to match O2's offer but he can get cashback with the O2 deal and TalkTalk actual download speeds aren't the fastest I have seen.
Are there any other options?

Leaving TalkTalk is like cancelling a subscription to Reader's Digest.
Impossible!
Even if you think you have switched, they will still keep on charging.
If he does sort it out, make sure that he cancels the direct debit once the final bill has been paid.0 -
If the line has been LLU'd by TT then you have to go back to BT and ask for a 'return to donor', this requires you to take 12m line rental with BT. Once that is done you can take your broadband from whichever ISP you wish.
You can't go direct from one LLU supplier to another. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi macman et al
As per my other post...
This may be changing now, as UW announced recently that they can now do transfers from Talk Talk LLU to UW LLU - hopefully, if they can do it, so can the other providers.

Can I ask who UW is?0

Hi dvs
UW = Utility Warehouse - see the thread under Gas & Electricity if you have a couple of days spare.

Hi dvs,
Some providers are now able to take over an LLU service but there may be additional costs involved. Its worth speaking directly to the company that you want to move to in order to see exactly what they can and can not do in terms of migrating your service.
If you have LLU services then it is not possible to keep part of the service with TalkTalk and part of the service with another provider. This is because LLU is provided by moving your line from BTs network and connecting it to TalkTalk equipment in the local exchange. Most other providers require a BT line to provide a service to you therefore the line would need to be re-connected to BTs network before they can offer a service. The re-connection to BTs network will cease the connection to TalkTalk equipment meaning we can no longer provide any part of the service to you.
If you do need to return your service to BT for O2 to provide a broadband service then you will need to arrange a return to donor as others have advised already. Once this has completed and your line is back on BTs network you'll be able to take a broadband service with another provider.
If you have any further questions please let me know. If you would like more specific advise relating to your account then you are probably best posting at https://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums.
Cheers

Of course UW being merely a reseller of other ISPs products, including TalkTalk, chances are the OP would end up with the same service as before albeit paying more for the privilege.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
Indeed, UW use Opal Telecom which is part of the Carphone Warehouse/Talk Talk Group. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

I left TalkTalk very easily. Cancelled the direct debit and awaited final bill plus leaving fee (about £60)0

Thanks for all your replies. I think the problem is more the downtime for the broadband rather than any fees. My friend has decided to leave TalkTalk and move to O2 whilst he is on holiday so the downtime won't affect him (although it affects me as I'm dog sitting! lol). O2 have said that will try to process the order more quickly once the line is back on the BT network. Think my friend will choose the Post Office as the telephone provider as there is no minimum contract and they use the BT Network (although we need to double check the terms).
I guess in the future they will be able to transfer lines more easily when other providers start taking over lines. Sky has already started to take over BT lines and I guess it's only a matter of time until other providers start to do this.0
