If you can use explorer then navigate to c:\windows\system32 and then click on cmd.exe does that work? Or try taskmanager and file / new task will give you a run box where you can try c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.

Explorer route gives me the same error message on trying to open cmd.exe. I can open a run box OK via Task Manager, but when I type sfc /scannow it says I need adminstrator rights to run a console session (I am logged into the Administrator account but can't right click to select 'run as administrator' within the run box). Any way around this, or shall I just reboot and pray?

Praying seemed to work, I rebooted and it seems OK.
Removed Ask toolbar via Uninstall Programs. HJT will not remove anything-after I click 'fix selected' it just goes back to the scan option. The original HJT error messages about the Hosts file still come up on opening.
I'm unsure if Combofix has cleared anything, am now going to uninstall MSE, and try reinstalling KIS2010, perhaps this will give an indication if the rootkit is still present?
Unless any one has any better ideas?
Edit: KIS2010 will still not install, going tor try another run of the Kaspersky online scanner to see if it can detect TDSS this time.

Dr Web is next on my list, running Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool first, which will take a while.

And there was me thinking you'd been mowing the lawn :D
Dr Web is about a third into the full scan now, so may as well let that complete?
Will then try HJT again, repost the log for that and then Sophos?
What's the chance of getting rid of a rootkit without trashing the registry?
The bizzare thing about this is that I don't even know for sure what the infection is, but there must be something blocking Kaspersky-but it will still allow MSE and Avira to install? And why won't it pick up Vista SP2?
