Trying to sort out a Dell Inspiron with a possible rootkit virus. The owner had Avast installed and decided to upgrade to Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. It refused to install properly. She got help from Kaspersky tech support and (I think) they helped her run an online scan which detected 'Rootkit.win32TDSS.d'. I have tried to install Kaspersky and the installer will not run, so have managed to install Avira instead and scanning with that now.
Have done MalwareBytes scan which reports all to be clean though, please could someone have a look at the log for me? Thank you.
Will post HJT log shortly.
One oddity-the PC has been regularly installing Windows Updates since new (it updated only today) according to the log, but is still running Vista SP1? Why hasn't it updated to SP2-is this a possible consequence of the rootkit infection?

Have just completed further scan using the Kaspersky Online Virus Removal Tool, and it's found nothing-so now really puzzled. If this is a false positive, why is Kaspersky refusing to install, and why is HJT giving an error message relating to the Hosts file?

Nothing like talking to yourself macman ;)

Have you tried the online scan again and is the rootkit still there?

    This any good..............

Well, no one else to talk to it seems...all out enjoying the bank holiday weather maybe?
I've only run the Kaspersky online scan once and it found nothing, as did the TDSSkiller app.
Thinking that maybe it was clean, I took Avira off and tried again to reinstalll Kaspersky-but it gets to the installer page and the program just closes. It's not a faulty CD, as I 've also tried doing it on a free trial download from the Kaspersky site-the same failure occurs.
This and the problem thrown up by the HJT log makes me think something is definitely still in there.
Just giving it a scan with MS Security Essentials, which installed without a problem. Seemed no harm in doing that too.

mac, try combofix then dr web....last couple of real nasties have needed the good doctor to finally clear the PITA's, then back to MBAM to clear out leftovers....I know dr web takes hours, but it's usually worth the wait ;)

  • You have to be careful w9iith Dr Web as it produces a few false positives.

Combofix is the way to go.

good point R-S, if you have Combofix on the pc already, Dr Web picks up 2 (or was it 3 last time, can't remember) parts of Combofix as false positives. If you delete them with dr web you have to download combofix again :(
