Best paint for banisters, architraves etc

Which is the best type of paint for banisters, architraves etc, and is it worth using primer first?

Also does anyone know of any bank holiday paint deals I can take advantage of?

Thanks:beer:

Just found your post so I will give my penneth worth.

If your starting from untreated timber I would always knot(if pine) and prime. The rest is down to personal choice, but personally I prefer oil based eggshell which gives a semi shine and you can wipe down and clean easier. The porblem with water based paints are that they raise the grain(feels rougher) so you need to sand again.Just my preference but I prefer cream painted woodwork rather than white as IMO white paints tend to go off white quickly...

I wouldn't paint stair handrails as they will mark and get dirty quickly.I would recomment staining these ,if hardwood oil them .Paint the spindles/ballusters and newal posts and IMO it looks good...

I can't tell you what the best type of paint is as I'm no expert, but I sanded back the stained and varnished wood on the bannisters of our staircase and galleried landing, then primed, undercoated and finally used Dulux Trade Diamond Satinwood on them. I didn't find it the easiest paint to use, I must admit, but it looks great and has kept as brilliant white as it was when I did it 2 years ago. Any touch-ups where the wood has been knocked since then don't show as the colour is stayed exactly the same - no yellowing or fading at all.

Edit: As leveller says, you should definitely treat the knots before starting with any priming or painting - otherwise the resin will show through. And I also second his (or her!) suggestion not to paint the handrails. I varnished ours with mid-oak. Looks fantastic and stands up to wear very well indeed.

Will definately take your advice on board.

@madget it would be great if you could post a pic of your staircase, it sounds like the kind of thing I want to do.

Thanks, Ditto. It used to be a horrid very deep reddy orange colour and looked awful, really dark and claustrophic. It's so much lighter and brighter now.

Dare I tell you that it took me 4 months! :o Mind you, we have a galleried landing and the wood stain was so bad and the spindles so fiddly that I sanded it all by hand - with the exception of using a Black & Decker Mouse on the few flat bits (on the bannister rail and the side panel). The dust was horrendous and made me asthma play up so much that one of my friends actually begged me to stop and get a trademan in to finish! However, when she saw the end product, she was blown away, and I got a huge amount of satisfaction from knowing I'd done it by myself.

It was absolutely worth all of the hard work - but I'd never, ever, ever do it again! :rotfl: Saved us loads of money, though!

I like the picture- thanks Madget.

Probably a silly question- but did you take the spindles off the stairs or paint in-situ? (Is it even feasible to remove spindles?)
