I vacuum the fan cutouts and dust filters on my PCs fairly regularly, but rarely vacuum inside. When I have done, I hold the vacuum nozzle above the motherboard, etc. so it doesn't come into contact with anything and wipe the inside of the case (not the electronics!) with a damp cloth.

If you keep the fans/filters fairly clean, you shouldn't get too much dust building up inside the PC.

As for the direction of fans, you would generally have the fans sucking in at the front and blowing out at the back. The idea is to keep air flowing in one side, over all the hot components and out the other - if all the fans sucked inwards it would be hard for heat to escape. It's generally preferable to have the exhaust fans at the back so you don't get a jet of air from the front of your PC that blows all the papers on your desk/floor about!

My main PC has two 80mm intake fans at the front, a 200mm intake fan on the side, an 80mm fan on the rear that originally blew outwards but I reversed this to suck air over a liquid radiator, and two 140mm fans on the top that blow outwards.

I have a small compressor (24l I think) and just fire that into my machines every few months, making sure ALL fans are locked down to prevent killing them (or something else)

Compressed air isn't the best idea.
It can easily spray moisture inside the case. Same applies when using cans of it to clean camera equipment.

If you do use, DO NOT shake the can before spraying. It'll be instinctive to shake before spraying.....but potentially, a really bad idea.

Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!

I vacuum out the PC's every year at home and at the office. I use a length of garden hose with the end wrapped in packing tape to fit into the hoover hose. This and a soft paintbrush do the job. Our office is dusty and it is amazing how much builds up over the year. I prefer to suck the dust away rather than blowing it around the the office.

I've always vacc-ed the fan of my desktop. No harm done, you just wouldn't believe how much dust gets in there!

"Now I know you get what you pay for - and this is rubbish. Absolutely rubbish. It couldn't pick up a crumb from anywhere let alone a desktop. I bought two as a 'novelty' - just as well the recipients didn't expect them to work either. Well embarrassed at having bought such a naff, useless ornament, cos that is all it is. The batteries are more use - in another appliance!"

"Cute little critters but that's all they're good for - ornaments! Useless suction ability, which is very disappointing given how excellent the real versions are!
The area in which a vacuum is created is far too big - there's no way 3 AA batteries can have much effect!"
