Go back maybe a month. you can always undo this0 -
do you have antivirus or a firewall that is blocking net access?0

NO firewall active on the laptop, and after de-activating the anti virus still the same problem.
I tried to do a system restore, but for some reason windows couldnt restore back!?0 -
Long shot but have you tried a cable from the router to the pc?
Is this a ADSL modem & router combined?0 -
Well, going via a cable doesnt seem to work either - same thing, ping works, proving the connection out, but ie and firefox fail to load pages.
I think we're at the point of re-installing windows.0 -

Which anti-virus have you disabled? Try uninstalling the anti-virus completely with the vendors removal tool if necessary. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Nothing in IE using either web names or ip addresses.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, we're re-installing windows now

I know, espresso, but having tried a lot of things, and got nowhere, fast, a fresh install of windows will at least eliminate any other config issues. And as it is not hardware related (ping working from cmd prompt), we will at least have it up and running.
It was probably needing done anyways, its been 3 years since we last had internet, and I think it was more than that since the last time windows was reloaded - registry is probaly full of all sorts of rubbish.0
