Network Connection problems

We've just had our Talk Talk broadband go live, after a period when we havnt had broadband (not at this address anyways).

We have two computers - one desktop and one laptop. The desktop is connected via a network cable into the router, and the internet works fine on that PC - however the laptop cannot view any websites. The network adaptorin the laptop is working, as you can ping https://www.google.co.uk fine, and get responses back. However, load internet explorer or firefox and they cannot load any web pages.

I've checked all the settings, and its not set up to use dial-up connections or proxy's etc. Its running XP sp2.

In the network settings, are both PC and laptop set to obtain their IP addresses automatically?

If you open a command prompt on each and type "ipconfig", what does it tell you about IP address, subnet and default gateway?

    Both computers have similar information:

    Desktop:

    Connection-specific DNS suffix : dlink.com
    IP Address 192.168.1.3
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    Laptop:
Ethernet adaptor Wireless Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS suffix : dlink.com
    IP Address 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

I followed that link, and it suggested the command ipconfig /renew - which returned the information below :(

It did not suggest you use that command to fix the problem, it suggested "netsh winsock reset".

Ah, sorry. I've now reset winsock, and restarted the laptop but the browsers still won't display webpages. Any other suggestions?

We've run the adaware that is on the laptop and it didn't pick up more than a single cookie. The laptop hasn't been online to pick up viruses any how.

check to see if your browser is connecting with no proxy and never dial a connection, with lan settings set to auto detect
