Some advice please on Surround Sound and Hard Drive Recorders

Hi,

We have just purchased a Blu Ray Player and were really looking forward to enjoying a good film with our surround sound....only to discover the system we have is not compatable!

The surround system we have is the Sony DAV-DZ230. Having done a bit of research this system only seems to work using the in built DVD player and cannot be connected to external surround sources such as bluray, PS3 etc. So we are now looking to upgrade our system and from reading some posts on here the best way forward would be to purchase a seperate AV receiver - hopefully one where we can use our existing speakers. I'm not sure if speakers have standard connections or not?
Does anyone have any recommendations? We don't have a massive budget (approx £250).

We are also looking to buy a Hard Drive recorder, Humax seems to have some good reviews, but we are looking for recommendations on these too please.

Any advice greatfully received ;)
Thanks to all those who take the time :A and effort to post!!
