Hi all
I have a old p2 266 and want to build a new pc
I know everything nowadays is a step up from my current setup
but if I get a sempron and cheapish motherboard, ram, gfx card, case will it be a reasonable system for less than £200
i know its not going to run the new games at high resolutions but i would like a pc that would run faster than what ive got
any help is much appreciated

Well, yes, it would probably run MUCH faster than your current P2/266 machine.
I would suggest looking at places like Novatech, Maplins, etc for a case + m/board + processor 'barebones' kit, then adding memory (from crucial.com) and whatever else you need. Are you planning to use HDD's and other hardware from your existing PC? Just wondering about the age, condition and capacity of some items - although they are, of course, 'free' !
I would also suggest (if budget allows) upgrading the o/s to Windows XP if you have not already thought about this.0 -
This acer base unit http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=4949759990&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=80436
from https://www.ebuyer.com has a lot of good reviews. There is no monitor in the price but it seems a good starting point. The graphics are unlikely to play the latest 3D games but it does have an AGP slot for a better graphics card.

I was looking at the ebuyer website too (they're not always the cheapest but they're a good benchmark for market prices).
I just DIY'ed this £207 system*:
AMD Sempron 2300+ (SDA2300DUT3D) Processor 256KB Cache FSB333 - OEM
Abit VA-10 KM400 Socket A 333FSB DDR333 On-Board VGA 8xAGP Retail Box
Ebuyer 512MB DDR333 PC2700 Extra Value DIMM
Hightech ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB TV-Out DVI Retail Box
Casecom Kg 188 In Grey And Black With Usb/audio No Psu
Ebuyer 400 Watt PSU P4 Ready
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8 40Gb ATA 133 7200rpm Disk Drive - OEM
Liteon 52x Internal IDE CD-ROM Drive - OEM
Sony OEM 3.5 Floppy Drive
High Quality Round Idecable Ata133 90cm In Blue
Ebuyer Ide & Floppy Cable Pack
The above system should do a good job at gaming (even the newer games are reported to perform well with both the CPU and graphics card above). Of course the components are not top notch but they're good budget components (read their reviews). You may want to have a CD/DVD-RW drive instead of just a CD-ROM drive or in addition to it, but rewritable or DVD drives are not essential components. The sound card is in-built into the motherboard above, so I saved a few quid on that (I think it's well worth having a decent graphics card though, so I chose a proper card over the in-built graphics card).
*I used ebuyer only for the sake of a quick quote. No doubt some parts will be cheaper elsewhere, so shop around. The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.0 -
why bother m8
have a look at this thread on another part of the forum.
