When adult children leave home ....

...... what do you do with all their stuff that is left behind??

Or ...to put it another way....if you have left and set up home with others is there a pile of stuff from your youth still at your parents!

I have boxes of things left behind that area cluttering up the attic, that does not seem to be wanted, yet, when a clear out is mentioned its, its all precious and they will get around to it!!

Or should I just ignore the stuff and hide it all in a corner!!

Ignore and hide in a corner.

My parents were guardians of my youth - they need to protect these precious items of mine.

Both Mum and Dad are getting a bit tired of this line now though!!!!!!!!!!!

I have memory boxes for my 3. Anything which doesnt fit in those will have to go!

My dad started bringing my stuff round, hmph! I mean, I've not been left 2 decades yet, and already he's bringing round my belongings, and calling MY bedroom 'the back bedroom'!!!!! Even worse, I've ended up with some of my brother's stuff too!

  • All the time we were renting, the parents kept hold of the precious items. But as soon as we got a mortgage and bought our home my husbands parents brought a car load of boxes each time they visited until it was all at ours.

They would arrive with a bunch of flowers we would all sit down to a lunch and then they would say, we have a present in the car for you, and we would each bring a few boxes in to the house and spend the next few weeks going through the items.

Now our loft is full of crap until we decide to do a sort out, probably when we next move!

I am one of six, five of us have left home and I believe I am the only one who took all my belongings, my bro still gets some post there after more than 20 years:eek:

I know I will have this problem with my 2, they are attached to stuff and it is already taking up space in the loft. I plan to take a box or two round when they first move into their own homes and then take one on every visit till it's all gone;)

I had to leave a lot of stuff behind when I came to Devon, and my mother is keeping it. I just kept the essentials, but there's still a lot of useless junk that my mother doesn't want to throw away. Therefore I was quite mortified when she asked me the other day if she should sell my books.
I can't wait till the day I have the means to bring them with me.

When my husband left home, he left his dog behind. He still gets ribbed about t.

Whe I left, I took all my personals with me, and my mum redecorated, put a new doubl ebed in, and chucked out most of the remaining stuff.

Our eldest is talking abou leaving, though I am encouraging very strongly against. When/if he does leave, someone else will take it over, but they'll have to move whatever he leaves behind to a corner. And they must understand if he changes his mind, they'll have to vacate.

But he is only approaching 17. I guess once the children reach maturity, what I might call 'grown up', then I daresay anything left behind will move to the shed. Then, at some point, the tip.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Going through this with my son at this very time. I have asked him several times to come and collect his things but he says he doesn't have room for them.

I was trying to make a point and refusing to pack it all up for him. I am pretty much at the point of bagging it up and taking it to the charity shop (maybe not the pink fluffy handcuffs and thongs though).

When I left home, anything I didn't take with me I binned so my room was stripped empty by the time of my wedding day. Like the poster above, my brother still gets post at my mum's and still has some of his stuff there.

I have loads of stuff at my parents' house and they have been asking me to deal with it recently in case they want to move, but I just don't have
