Why do these callers ask you to press 9 ? Just to keep you busy ? I don't think so.

But it is still the case if you press "9" or try phoning the number up that is missed (which is what the website article you quoted is talking about), you WILL be charged for the call at a premium rate. And this is what the scammers want you to do.
Nonsense (but if you want to believe it, feel free).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yup, the "press 9" story is utter nonsense.

Interestingly (I thought that number rang a bell), the number cited has been subject to a series of complaints to Ofcom. BT have investigated and the calling line identity has been shown to be corrupted further back in the network...should be 0021etc which is an Algerian number. So far the authorities have been powerless to stop it and the technology isn't really there to block calls from a specific CLI. The worst thing about it is a lot of call recipients assume the number's corrupted and is a Birmingham number, add a 1 to give 0121, and plague the owner of that Birmingham number with misdirected calls.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...
