http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/02135371000/7 lists numerous calls from that CLI (which is one digit too long to be a real Birmingham number so is probably bogus).
One or two reports mention a short survey (yeah, right) and Lifestyle Research Centre but a Google search suggests that, like the number, is bogus too.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
My answer would be don't worry too much about these phone calls. What they are trying to do is get information from you that they can either use to clone your identity or sell to third-party or at worse use it in a fraud. So, NEVER GIVE THEM YOUR DETAILS OR ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. Especially if they say "Well done YOU are a prize WINNER!!"... IT'S A FRAUD!! Don't let them make a fool out of YOU.
What to do;
1) If anyone phones and asks you information they do not already know. DON'T GIVE THEM IT. Especially personal information like - Name, Address, Date of Birth, etc...
2) If they are "Carrying out a Survey", JUST PUT THE PHONE DOWN. Stuff their Survey! They will soon get the message you are no sucker.
3) If you are continually getting nuisance phone calls from the same number. It can be classed as HARASSMENT, which can be dealt with by the Police. The Police may seem unwilling to act, but be pushy! Remind them that Harassment is a criminal offense so the Police must act if a complaint is made.
And what I always do is toy with them. I like to take the wee-wee when I get one of these phone calls. When they know you are having a laugh on them they are less likely to ever call you again. :rotfl: Wise move I say! :j
P.S. NEVER, NEVER, Press a number on your phone if a message or a person on the other end asks you to do so. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE PHONE CALL, and there is no way you will be able to get the money back... Easily anyway. Some reverse charges are £1.50 per minute!!
Just have ZERO tolerance to unsolicited phone calls. You didn't ask them to call you, so just put the phone down...0 -

No it isn't. It has happen and I've heard about this happening loads of times.0 -
No, this did indeed happen. The calls originate from outside the UK, and BT were pretty much powerless to do anything about it.
Pushing a button was your acceptance to hearing more of the message - and so they charge you for the priviledge.
The scam was being investigated - not sure what happened to the case....0 -
Let me make a Quote....
"Premium Telephone charges!!
Your phone rings and you get a recorded message as follows: "Congratulations, we are calling to advise you that you have won an all expenses paid trip to ......... Please press 9 now to hear further details". If you press 9 you will be connected to a premium line, billing you at something in the region of £20 per minute. Any attempt to hang up is overridden by their system and the call will last least five minutes! Apparently the calls are being made from outside the UK making BT relatively powerless. If you receive one of these calls don't press 9 but do note as much information as you can about the call and report it to the Police and/or BT."

Come on, if it did happen, then there must be real verifiable examples out there. Plus it will be listed in BT's tariffs somewhere.
Or it is plain internet myth.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
That Scamwatch website has more hoaxes on it than true scams

Why do these callers ask you to press 9 ? Just to keep you busy ? I don't think so.
And you are going to advise people to ignore what business experts are saying ?? Silly Boy. I would think you may be one of these scammers. I know someone who has been leading a campaign against Scammers. This includes phone scammers. They even have the backing of Martin Lewis himself !! And they are in the know.
The website you gave wasn't read correctly.
They DO NOT say that ALL information contained is incorrect, only part is.
They mention in the article - "In the real incident, callers were charged at the maximum allowable rate of £1.50 per minute". So my £5 was incorrect and I correct myself. But it is still the case if you press "9" or try phoning the number up that is missed (which is what the website article you quoted is talking about), you WILL be charged for the call at a premium rate. And this is what the scammers want you to do.
So they did get charged.0
