look up your local 'freecycle' people give away amazing things and all you have to do is collect them. a friend in a similar position kitted out their flat in about a week with really decent stuff!

I agree. my sister got a kingsize bed that was like new! couldnt believe someone was giving it away.

Put up a wanted ad on freecycle also explaining the situation. Say you would be greateful for any unwanted items, ie kettle, plates, bedcovers, curtains etc. Its amazing the amount of stuff people keep that they dont want and its not till they know someone is in need of something that they then realise they have it!

    Who is eligible?

You can apply for a Community Care Grant if you are either:

    • already getting Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Pension Credit, or payment on account of one of these benefits
    • likely to start getting one of these benefits within the next six weeks because you're moving out of care

The OP has already said that she's getting contributions based JSA so doesn't qualify.

freecycle is now called Freegle, so type that into google

They are separate organisations despite the fact that they both use Yahoo Groups. Freegle broke away from Freecycle when moderators in the UK became unhappy with the direction of the US based organisation.

As well as Freegle, Freecycle, Gumtree freebies, the OP should look at the Emmaus website to see if they've got a furniture/appliance store near them - they offer low prices to those on benefits.
